In Britain and Europe: No shortage of labour (workers) Shortage of markets (people who wanted to buy goods ) Shortage of natural resources

4 Colonialists looked to other countries for markets and natural resources

5 Resources Europe needed
Human resources: * People to work in the factories 2. Capital resources: * Money to establish factories 3. Natural resources: * To supply raw materials for production

6 Why colonialism? Europe was rich after slave trade and several centuries of trade with Africa and Asia = no problem with capital There was no shortage of labour to work in factories = didn’t need people Shortage of raw materials! = Africa was rich in natural resources so many Europeans encouraged the colonisation of Africa so they could get hold of raw materials for factories They needed new markets! = They were producing more than they could sell, came to sell it in their colonies in Africa

7 Relationship? British took resources from Africa
Processed it in Britain Sold processed goods (back) to Africans
