7 “The Veldt” Read “The Veldt” paying special attention to foreshadowing ( a literary device by which an author hints what is to come) then answer the following questions: Describe the nursery, both as a marketed ideal and as it is presented in the story. What was the feeling the father and mother were getting from the intense scene depicted in the nursery when they entered? At what point does it become a menacing place? Give textual examples. Describe the character of the Hadley’s as parents. What type of parents are they? What type of children are Wendy and Peter? At one point, George Hadley comments that the nursery may not like being shut off. What are the implications of this statement? What is the theme of “The Veldt?” How is this theme dramatized in the story?

CHOOSE 1 title from the previous slide/ table of contents from your book. WRITE any words that come to mind when thinking about the title you chose EXPAND- pick any word and expand on it Whose bottle was it? What is in the bottle? Where did you find the bottle? When did the bottle get filled up? Or emptied? How did it get here? Why did they leave it?

25 The Long Rain Brochure Your mission: Become a travel agent for the planet Venus. Create a brochure that lists 5 potential activities for patrons to pursue when going on a Venus Adventure. Step 1: Come up with two lists of words that evoke cold/wet imagery and warm/dry imagery. Get 5 examples for each for a TOTAL OF 10 EXAMPLES. Step 2: Put a positive spin on the cold/wet words. Step 3: Begin brainstorming activity suggestions for travelers that might be included on your brochure. You must include the language of imagery to entice the traveler to come to Venus! Step 4: Now plan your brochure’s rough draft. It will have three sections; it can be a one-page brochure/poster, or you can design a folding brochure .
