Risk Factors Family Factors: Poor family relationships. Teen may feel alienated from the family which makes them vulnerable to the influence of peers who use drugs.

Social Factors: 1. Peer Groups: Teenagers may use drugs for acceptance of their peers 2. Role Models: Role models may cause glamorization 3. Competitive Pressure: A. Athletics and aesthetics: Steroids, pain killers stimulants and other supplements that may be dangerous B. Scholastic: Stimulants and other drugs that claim to bring “focus”

Personal Factors 1. Use drugs to deal with stress or any other life situations 2. Low self-esteem

Protective Factors Family Factors: Strong family bonds, parental awareness of teen’s social activities and peer groups, clear rules that are consistently enforced. Social Factors: Strong bonds to school and other organizations, associating with peers who are drug free, having supportive and accepting friends.

Personal Factors: A commitment to success in academics and extracurricular activates and a personal belief that drug abuse is unacceptable.
