4 1948 Election Harry S. Truman (Dem) Thomas Dewey (Rep) Strom Thurmond (Dixiecrat) Thurmond runs due to Truman's support for Civil Rights The split in the Democratic party leads the assumption Dewy will win Truman actually wins
