1 Kennedy’s New Frontier New Frontier is Kennedy’s plan in changing the nation. Most people in the 1960’s did not want reform. Many Southern Democrats joined with Republicans to block Kennedy’s proposals.

2 Kennedy’s plans blocked Kennedy wanted to reduce taxes to fight unemployment. This would give consumers more money to spend. This would make more products sell. This would make more jobs Congress failed to pass the reduction in taxes. Also failed to pass federal aid to education and health care plans for the elderly.

3 Kennedy’s successes 1962 – Steel producers announced an increase in prices. Kennedy thought this would lead to inflation. He cancelled government contracts with steel companies. Steel companies started to roll back prices. Kennedy’s ability to help the poor. Created the Area Redevelopment Act – gave financial assistants to economically distressed regions. Also increased minimum wage.

4 The Space Program April 1961, Soviets launched the 1 st human into space. Soviets claimed to the media that communist countries are superior. Kennedy stressed to Congress that we not only go to space, but go to the moon and back.

5 The Warren Court Supreme Court made changes that would affect American society greatly in the 1960’s. Chief Justice Earl Warren – extended individual rights and freedoms. BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION – ban on racial segregation in public schools.

6 Voting Reforms How legislative representation was determined had not been changed since the early 1900’s. BAKER VS. CARR, WESTBERRY VS. SANDERS, and RENYOLDS VS. SIMS. Before a country town could have the same amount of representation as New York City. This created a problem for heavy populated areas. Legislative districts would be re-zoned. Legislative districts must have equal representation. This guaranteed each citizens vote had equal weight.

7 Rights of the Accused MAPP VS. OHIO – search warrant required, this will be applied at the state and local police. GIDEON VS. WAINWRIGHT – state will provide free lawyers for poor people. ESCOBENO VS. ILLINOIS – lawyers can be present during police questioning.

8 Religious Freedom ENGEL VS. VITALE – banned public school prayers. Reasoning of the Supreme Court: This is not making any religion the official religion of the United States.

9 Kennedy’s Assassination Went to Dallas, TX to get support from the Southern Democrats for his re election. Nov 22, 1964 – shot in the head, while he was in a convertible car. Lyndon Johnson will become president hours later – sworn into office at the airport.

10 Warren Commission Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the assassination of Kennedy. Claimed to be a supporter of communism and have connections to the Soviet Union and Cuba. The Warren Commission was to investigate the assassination. Lee Harvey Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby. Ruby had connections to the mafia. CONSPERIACY THEORIES WENT WILD. However the Warren Commission found no evidence claiming that Lee Harvey Oswald was not the only person involved in the killing of Kennedy.

11 End to the Beginning Kennedy’s short period of presidency contained many historical outcomes. He bettered relations with the Soviets after the Cuban Missile Crisis. He created the Peace Corps to receive good will to America throughout the world. He dedicated his domestic policy to helping the poor and African Americans obtaining civil rights.
