A brief introduction Bithynia – an early country of Asia Minor, which is located in present day Turkey. The people who first settled there were the Thracians. Cyrus the Great had granted the Thracians a little autonomy, this was done after Bithyina was included into the Persian Empire. A dynasty was developed under Zipoetes, who was soon followed by Nicomedes I. Nicomedia was established as the capital. Upon his death, Nicomedes “willed Bithynia to Rome.” Pliny the younger became the governor[c.AD 110] below Trajan, who was emperor. Hadrian’s rule followed. This led to the “end of Bithynian prosperity.” Source: Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, Copyright [c] 2004
