attack on Pearl Harbor = huge success for Japan damage to US Navy’s Pacific Fleet took time to overcome limited American ability to strike back

3 After Pearl Harbor: Japanese advantages:
navy ruled the seas after Pearl Harbor better equipped fighting closer to home Backed by Germany and Italy Japan conquered many strategic islands/ territories in the Pacific Guam (2 weeks after Pearl Harbor) Philippines under attack! Singapore, Hong Kong, Burma = territories

4 General Douglas MacArthur (Army)
April 1942, surrendered the Philippines (American territory) to Japanese “I shall return” Admiral Chester Nimitz (Navy) “island hopping” Bataan Death March = marched up the Bataan Peninsula (map?) Tropical heat, lack of food/water, brutal violence from captors killed 600 Ams, 10K Filipinos Thousands more died in the prison camp

5 Military Strategies island hopping kamikazes
skipping over Japanese strongholds & capturing weaker targets not always easy kamikazes Japanese pilots who loaded planes with explosives & deliberately crashed into Allied ships Island hopping led to moving closer to Japan Bypassed Japanese strongholds were cut off from outside supplies and would eventually weaken Kamikazes were successful in sinking numerous ships What do kamikazes sort of sound like?
