Stage 1 Poor economy, Mountain of debt, lack of jobs and Estates-General (legislative branch) that is doing very little to help June 1789 Tennis Court Oath of the 3rd estate. July rumors spread the French troops were going to take over Paris – People went to Bastille to get weapons and took it over. People are in charge not the monarchy…

5 Stage 1 continued National Assembly functions to create next government. Rights of Man (like US D of I) Supported the Bourgeoisie (Middle Class) majority of people are poor however-so they feel unrepresented Women march to Versailles to get Marie Antoinette

7 Stage 1 continued King tries to escape Paris with family Radicals: San-culottes and Jacobins King doesn’t comply with Constitutional Monarchy 1792-losing Franco-Prussian war, radicals are in control of National Convention and King Louis XVI is beheaded as a traitor

9 Stage 2 Reign of Terror Committee for Public Safety- government in turmoil gave these 12 almost absolute authority. Maximilien Robespierre rises to rule the Committee “Liberty cannot be secured unless criminals lose their heads Reign of Terror Work with reason, kill those that are enemies to this. used the Guillotine p.588 The Convention gets tired of this and executes Robespierre in 1794

11 Moderates create new Constitution in 1795
Third Stage Moderates create new Constitution in 1795 5 man Directory and two house legislature 3rd Constitution since 1789. Bourgeoisie are majority. Rising bread prices cause riots Directory suppresses riots Church doesn’t like new rules set up in Constitution People look to Napoleon Bonaparte: military hero to bring political peace.

12 Stage Four: Napoleon 1799-Napoleon uses his popularity through military victories to get high political position.1801=Emperor of France Then he quickly maneuvered to absolute authority while bringing reforms. Peasants had rights to land Napoleonic Code: equality, religious tolerance… Empire grows p. 595 Spain resists-guerilla warfare=hit and run Russia and Napoleon assist in Continental system-basically divide and conquer Europe. Russia backed out

14 Stage four continued Napoleon invades Russia 1812.
Russians retreat and put in place the scorched earth policy 600,000 soldiers for France... less than 20,000 survive on the 1000 mile retreat from Moscow Napoleon steps down from power and exiles to Elba. Louis XVIII takes over and accepts many of Napoleons policies Allies meet in Vienna after their victory against Napoleon.

Stage 4 continued Napoleon escapes Elba and rallies the troops Louis XVIII fled Napoleon rules again for 100 days and loses to the British and Prussians at Waterloo in Belgium Napoleon forced to abdicate goes to St. Helena-a lonely island in S. Atlantic. Congress of Vienna Strived to create a lasting peace Restored surrounding monarchies and Louis XVIII-1815
