2 Good evening and welcome to 5th and 6th grade orientation
Good evening and welcome to 5th and 6th grade orientation. We would like to take this time to welcome you and your child to Lobit Middle School and your student’s teachers. We’re sure you are as excited as we are about the upcoming year. It’s going to be great, and we’re looking forward to getting to know both you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. Logan Corbin- Math Elizabeth Maixner– Science Mara Turner– Reading/LA/SS Deborah Wiedemann– Reading/LA/SS Please be mindful that we do not check our s or phone calls during class time. We will return any messages as soon as we can.

3 Arrival: 6:45-7:00 – Students eating breakfast will report to the cafeteria Students NOT eating breakfast will report to the gym 7:00 Students are released to homeroom 7:10 Pledges to the Flag and Morning Announcements 7:20 School begins. Students are tardy beginning at 7:21 Dismissal: 2:37 Students are dismissed from school Dress Code: Please reference the DISD dress code for students. Parents will receive phone calls from the front office staff if students are in violation of any part of this code. Parent Conferences will be scheduled by teachers soon. If you have specific questions or concerns about your child’s progress, please them to schedule a conference

We will have teacher webpages that will hold lots of good information. The links on the school page will start working on November when our pages officially go live. Until then we all have our pages ready to view please use the following address to view the teacher pages until the links are active on the school’s main page.

5 Hallway – Students are expected to walk quietly through the halls so other classes can continue their learning without distractions. Cafeteria – Students sit with their homeroom classes and remain seated until teacher dismisses them. Classroom – Students are expected to: Follow directions Be Respectful to teachers and other students Come to class prepared with all supplies Remain on task at all time Complete all assignments/homework Lobit Middle School Rules: Respect Yourself Respect Others Respect Property

6 Reading Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every night.
Math/Science: Math Homework will be assigned every Monday and will be due on Fridays. 5th Grade Science Homework will also be assigned every Monday and will be due on Fridays. Projects: Most projects will be completed in class. Occasionally, work will be sent home to help the in-class project (research, unfinished work).

Through out the year we will be studying various genres of reading. We will cover many areas within each genre: Text structure and features Author’s purpose Plot Theme Character traits Main idea Summary Point of view

8 Throughout the year we will be studying words and word meaning to advance our vocabulary.
Units of study: Greek Roots Latin Roots Prefixes Suffixes

9 This year we will be focusing on several forms of essay writing and the writing process.
Within these essays we will be working on adding: Figurative language Leads and Conclusions Word choice Various sentence structures Sensory details Strong Thesis Statements Concluding Statements

10 5th Grade: U.S. History from early exploration to current. 6th Grade: World Cultures and Geography

11 problems and see what we are learning at school.
Students will use many skills they have learned in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. There will be daily instruction that incorporates review of these TEKs in addition to 6th grade content.It is important for students to: • Gradually build a strong grasp of fractions, decimals, place value, operations and •multiplication of rational numbers as we move throughout the year. •Students will learn how to apply their own problem solving process to word problems •and real life situations. •All classes will have Unit Tests and checkpoints. Students will be expected to •maintain an interactive math notebook all year long. **This notebook can be used as a tool to help students and parents understand homework problems and see what we are learning at school.

12 In 5th grade we study matter, geology, Earth and Space, ecosystems, and more. We bridge the gap between what’s been learned in elementary school and set the stage for 6th grade. In 6th grade we will cover a variety of topics in life science, chemistry, Earth and Space, as well as force, motion, and energy. I make sure I vary activities throughout the year to meet the learning styles of all students. We will have labs, notes, hands-on learning, videos, technology lessons and occasional guest speakers. 1st nine weeks: Science procedures Classification Levels of organisms-Ecosystems 2nd nine weeks: Elements/compounds Change in Matter Metals, non-metals & Metalloids 3rd nine weeks: Structures of the Earth Rock Cycle Plate Tectonics Space 4th nine weeks: Potntial/kenetic Motion Energy Transformations Simple Machines
