1 PSYC Day #2 June 17, 2011

2 Agenda Review game for roll call Quiz over theory and methods
Video on prenatal development Genetics and Prenatal Development Infancy, part 1 Video on Infancy and Early Childhood “Seasons of Life”

3 Review Activity and Roll Call
Attention Students – put out your name tents from last week, please Theory hangman game Methods – practice identifying variables and go over correct answers Take Quiz

4 Notes for Class Genetics Prenatal

5 Video Prenatal Development -- as you watch,
note the size and physical changes Look for evidence of cephalocaudal and proximodistal development patterns Watch for issues related to nervous system functioning -- we will be talking about that this afternoon and next week

6

7 Infancy PSYC 1120 Chapters 4 – 8 Part 1

8 Sensation versus Perception
Receiving environmental stimuli versus Giving meaning to information received by the sensory system Sensation involves hearing, seeing, tasting, touching and smelling Perception is how we understand that we are sensing

9 Neuron Parts of a neuron dendrite cell body axon synapse myelin

10 A Neuron

11

12

13 The Brain Left brain processes verbal, numerical, textual & logical sensory information Right brain processes spatial, colored & creative sensory information

14 Hemispheres have differing functions but don’t work independently.
Both generally work together to perform most tasks. One side may be faster. There is some question about the credibility of some of the brain dominance research, but clearly there are trends in our interest and abilities related to brain function.

15 Example Look at your textbook. Textbooks in our culture are written to appeal to left-brain dominant persons – there is much more black print on white paper and verbal understanding is necessary The pictures, highlighted text, colored inks, text boxes with shading, terms in margins, charts and diagrams, etc. are designed to appeal to right brain

16

17 The Brain Right and left halves are joined by the corpus callosum.
Pinky and brain

18 Myelin Sheath Insulation on axon to improve speed of transmission.
Also insulates axon from activity of other neurons. Myelinization or myelination - process of forming the sheath takes years to complete

19 Synapses Where one neuron meets another is the synapse
Synaptogenesis – as our nervous systems develop (pre-natally and post-natally), more and more connections are made between neurons This process is something like the way a leaf cutting grows roots and can be planted Information is carried from one neuron to another by chemical messengers called neurotransmitters

20

21 Reflexes Survival reflexes Breathing Sucking Rooting Swallowing

22 Startle or Moro Babinski Walking (stepping) Swimming

23 Film: Seasons of Life

24 Gross Motor Skills large body movements such as running, climbing, jumping and throwing
Earliest and easiest to be mastered

25 Fine Motor Skills are smaller body movements such as drawing, buttoning, coloring, tying shoes, using tools, etc.. require some maturation nervous system of to develop

26 Infancy Activity I have not come up with this yet. I will add it and send it later this week. It will be questions for the small groups and then a report out for discussion.
