6 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, 2 when she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 if the latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife, 4 then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.” D E U T E R O N O M Y 2 4 : 1 - 4

9 “What does עֶרְוָה mean, fornication or unbecoming?
Mt 19:3

10 “…Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh…” Jesus doesn’t answer the question “at first.” Instead He redirects their attention to where it ought to be which is “marriage” not divorce and remarriage. The truth is God did not create the marriage bond to be broken by man. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 1 9 : a

11 “…What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Marriage is supposed to be honorable amongst mankind and undefiled. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 1 9 : 6 b

12 “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled…”
Though Jesus did not directly answer the first question “ H E B R E W S 1 3 : 4

13 “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?”
Matthew 19:7

14 “…Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” Having demonstrated God’s expectation on marriage and having given the reason why divorce was granted in the first place, Jesus then answers their first question. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 1 9 : 8

15 “What does עֶרְוָה mean, fornication or unbecoming?
Mt 19:3

16 “And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery.” Thus, the Shammai were correct in saying the word “er-wat(h)” means “fornication” or “physical sexual action with someone or something other than your spouse.” Because this has always been the law on divorce and remarriage it was not a new teaching at all. Jesus taught it earlier in His ministry as well. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 1 9 : 9

17 “But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” John the Baptist had been teaching it also. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 5 : 3 2

18 “For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’” M A R K 6 :

19 Thus, Jesus answers both questions perfectly concerning who was writer on the teachings of Deuteronomy 24:1-4. However, Jesus’ response to the Pharisees caused the disciples to…(SLIDE)

21 “…If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
Jesus responds to their worry with an illustration. (SLIDE) M A T T H E W 1 9 : 1 0

22 “…Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” M A T T H E W 1 9 :

23 Some choose to be eunuchs
Some are born eunuchs Some are made eunuchs There will be some who are not ever going to be married. They, choose to be single there whole life. (2) There will be some who’s spouse will divorce them for a reason other than fornication and will force them to stay celibate. (3) There will be others, perhaps because of their unfaithfulness, will stay unmarried because of their desire to stay away from sin. Some choose to be eunuchs
