1 Taper off the Tardiness
Getting students to school on time School Improvement Plan By Heather Sneeuwjagt

2 Student Tardiness Around 15% of the student population is habitually tardy to school daily About 65% of students arrive late to school each week Only around 4% of the student population has perfect attendance *Data gathered from attendance records

3 School Improvement Plan:
Establish a comprehensive plan to decrease student tardiness to school with varied incentives and consequences through a tiered system based on total tardiness accumulated and total engagement during Homeroom Activities. (Eligibility based on number of tardy days accumulated, duration of school missed due to tardiness or number of days accumulated for exceptional attendance and Plicker participation). Students will interact with Plickers to display presence during Homeroom class Incorporating technology into the announcements will encourage student participation and attendance for rewards.

4 Objectives of this session
Participants will learn how to use technology such as Plickers to allow their students to show knowledge and presence in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own classes and questions for student engagement

5 Why do we need plickers? Our proposed School Improvement Plan is to decrease the tardiness in schools by incorporating fun, technology-enhanced, activities into Homeroom time. Students will show presence by engaging in academic and interest-based questions using Plickers. Questions will be teacher and student generated to increase school engagement and interaction. Incentives will be awarded for student participation and mastery.

6 What is Plickers? A comprehensive introduction

7 How it works

8

9 Setting up your classes:
Create an account Create classes by adding students to a group Color-code your classes to keep them organized and assign different Plicker questions to different groups. ** Take 2-3 minutes to add your homeroom students to a class and title it “Homeroom” or “HR”

10 Setting up your classes:
4. Creating new questions or retrieving pre-made questions from an archive

11 Take 10 minutes with your grade level team teachers to create a few fun problems! Archive them as “HR Questions” (Homeroom Questions)

12 Setting up your classes:
5. Creating the student cards

13 Let’s get started! How students will use the cards

15 Student Responses in “Live View”

16 Review student responses in a cohesive report at the end of class:

17 Plickers! Any Questions?

18 How will this work for us?
Students will pick up their QR code from their homeroom teacher upon entering school (on time). During the morning announcements, the question of the day will pop up. Questions can include any subject/content from sports, to health questions, to math and reading, etc. Students’ answers will be scanned by the homeroom teacher. Tokens can be awarded for students who get the answer correct. Students can win extra tokens for creating their own questions to be on the announcements with a shout-out for creating it.

19 How will this work for us?
Each teacher is responsible for scanning their students’ responses for the day and passing out tokens to those who answered correctly. Teachers will be encouraged to have students take turns scanning the classroom for student responses, etc. In addition to the Plickers, the students can write their answers on a piece of paper and at the end of each week, the answers can be collected on Fridays with the attendance folder, and on Monday, the students who get the entire week correct, can go in a drawing for a prize (free pencils, $1.00 voucher for the café, etc.)

20 Improvement Plan in Detail:
Strategy Establish a comprehensive plan to decrease student tardiness to school with varied incentives and consequences through a tiered system based on total tardiness accumulated and total engagement during Homeroom Activities. (Eligibility based on number of tardy days accumulated, duration of school missed due to tardiness or number of days accumulated for exceptional attendance). Action Steps Responsibility Timeline Resources A. Data collection on student attendance and duration of tardiness per student. Time based per month and per term. Attendance secretary with assistance from other office secretaries. SY 16/17 Online X2 Attendance Program B. Continuous communication with parents and students regarding accumulated time of each student so all parties are aware of status for consequence. Grade level administrators and homeroom teachers. Online X2 Program of student contact information C. Simple incentives for all students with no tardiness all month. More elaborate incentives for no tardiness for an entire term/semester. PBIS (Positive Behavior Incentive System) Committee Per month Per Term – at Extreme Assemblies PBIS Committee Funding Small tokens and prizes for student incentives D. Varied consequences for number of days tardy and total time of tardiness to be served during incentive time and Saturday School. Classroom Teachers Classroom teachers on scheduled rotation Stipend pay for Saturday School Teachers. E. Engaging and Interactive Homeroom activity to encourage students to come to school on time to participate. All homeroom classes Meet per week to discuss plans Online web tools - Plickers Laptops/desktops/ipads (at least one device per class)

21 Improvement Plan in Detail:
Varied consequences will be established for number of tardy days and minutes total of tardiness to be served on Saturdays students with minor infractions will just stay inside during outside incentive time Incentives will be established each month for all students with no tardy days nice weather outside and gym time, movies, tokens like necklaces, bracelets, café bucks… etc.

22 Any Final Questions?
