GAD causes people to worry all the time, often for unimportant reasons. Panic Disorder- causes intense fear and panic attacks. Symptoms include pounding heart, sweating and nausea. The fear may become so awful that people will go out of their way to avoid anything that may cause another attack.

Phobias Phobias are intense and exaggerated fears of specific objects or situations. Includes the following disorders: Social Anxiety Disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Post-traumatic stress disorder

SAD, OCD, PTSD Social Anxiety Disorder is a fear of people or situations involving being round people. OCD TRAPS people in a pattern of repeated thoughts and actions. PTSD occurs after a stressful event (physical or sexual violence can trigger the disorder). Some people recover quickly but others need more time.

Depression Clinical depression is not the same as having a bad test or break up with a girl/boyfriend. It is a mental illness that causes feelings of extreme sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt-lasting weeks, months or years.

Depression People often lose interest in activities they enjoy and will be tired and irritable for no apparent reason. The depression can cause you to sleep more or less, eat more or less, and withdrawal from family and friends. They may begin to think about suicide. You need to seek help for yourself or someone you think may have depression.

Bipolar Disorder Causes high and low mood swings. There is more than one type and can range from mild to extreme cases. The low periods are similar to depression and the high periods (MANIC) are when people experience a constant state of excitement. During manic stages they have lots of energy, may be irritable and act in reckless ways. In between they have normal behviors.

Mental Health and Incarcerations-thought?
Since the deinstitutionalization of mental/psychiatric hospitals the incarceration rate has jumped dramatically? Do you believe there is a correlation between mental treatment and incarceration? Do think if men sought help for mental health concerns we could decrease incarceration rates?

Major Depression This is a very serious condition in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything. Some people with major depression may reach point in which they feel they have nothing to live for and may consider SUICIDE. This is one of the leading causes of death among teens.

Cause of Teen Suicide Mental illness-if family members suffered from depression the teen is at greater risk for suicide. Teens living in poverty or using drugs and alcohol Abuse and violence Depression caused by bullying or cyberbullying

Suicide Most teens can turn to family, friends or other networks to help them work through problems or stress. Some teens do not have the support networks to cope with the problems teens face constantly and feel cut off and alone, making them more at risk of suicide.

Signs of Suicide-SOS Words-’it’s not worth it’ or ‘you won’t have me around much longer.’ Talking about suicide or death Feelings of hopelessness, guilt or worthless Pulling away from family and friends Loss of interest in normal activities Sudden changes in personal appearance Constant boredom or trouble concentrating

SOS Self-destructive behavior, such as, drug abuse, violence or running away Sudden drop in grades Giving away favorite belongings Become cheerful after a long period of depression (may be a sign they’ve made a decision or solved the problem)

Providing Support Sometimes a suicide attempt is a cry for help. The SOS are calls for help. Talking to them about their concerns lets them know that you care and that they are not alone. It allows them to see hope and that there are other options. You become part of the support system. Tell them you want to help.

Providing support Often the problem causing the thoughts will not be a problem in a few weeks or months and they may need to hear that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If they are depressed let them know that it can be treated and volunteer to help them seek help.

Providing support NEVER agree to keep their plans secret. You need to tell someone that your friend is considering suicide. If you think they may attempt suicide immediately, do not leave their side, call 911 and get them help.
