1 Molecules Around Me By Alexander Setha

2 Food and Nutritional Supplements
Nature Made D3400IU Vitamin D supplements. Ingredients: calcium carbonate, cellulose gel, croscarmellose sodium, maltodextrin, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, corn starch, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

3 Calcium Carbonate Molecular Formula: CaCO3
Inorganic salt because doesn’t contain hydrogen. Description: CaCO3 is commonly found as limestone, but also in many different nutritional supplements. It is an inorganic salt that’s also an antacid. It functions by getting rid of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It can also be used to help cure hypocalcemia (lack of vitamin D). Reference: Image:

4 Magnesium Stearate Molecular Formula: Mg(C18H35O2)2
Organic because it has carbon atoms Description: Magnesium Stearate is commonly used in capsules for different medications or supplements. They’re useful as a lubricant and are used to make sure that when filling the capsules everything is smooth. It is also hydrophobic which makes it a good lubricant for filling capsules. Reference: Image:

5 Croscarmellose Sodium
Molecular Formula: C28H30Na8O27 It’s synthetic which mean inorganic Description: Croscarmellose Sodium acts as an enzyme to break down the tablet’s contents for easier digestion making it faster for the effects to take place. Reference: Image:

6 Maltodextrin Molecular Formula: C6H10O5
It’s organic because it contains both carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms. Description: Maltodextrin is used for nutrition for it is a polymer that has D- glucose. It’s found commonly in potato starch, rice starch, and corn starch. Reference: Image:

7 Stearic Acid Molecular Formula: C18H36O2
Organic because has carbon and hydrogen. Description: Saturated fatty acid that originates from animal and vegetable fats. It looks like candle wax. It can be used to make candles, soap, and plastics. It’s supposed to harden the outside of a soap bar. References: Image:

8 Healthcare and Medicinal Product
Tylenol Pain reliever and fever reducer. Active Ingredient: acetaminophen 500 mg Inactive Ingredients: carnauba wax, corn starch, FD&C red no. 40 aluminum lake, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, powdered cellulose, pregelatinized starch, propylene glycol, shellac, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide.

9 Acetaminophen (Active Ingredient)
Molecular Formula: C8H9NO2 This is organic because it contains a carbon atom. Description: Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol. It is used to relieve pain, but it is hard on your liver and is linked to creating high blood pressure. The daily limit of this compound is 4,000 milligrams. References: Image:

10 Magnesium Stearate Molecular Formula: Mg(C17H34COO)2
Organic because it contains both carbon and hydrogen. Description: Magnesium stearate is a magnesium salt produced from stearic acid. Stearic acid itself is taken from edible foods. In the manufacturing process magnesium stearate is used as a lubricant. It lowers manufacturing costs by lowering the maintenance costs of the machine producing it. Reference: Image:

11 Propylene Glycol Molecular Formula: C3H8O2
Organic because carbon and hydrogen are in the compound. Description: Propylene can be used as a coolant and is also used for antibacterial purposes. This same compound is found in medicines and cosmetics. Its main purpose though is anti-freeze. NASA was experimenting with it to replace ethylene glycol as a coolant because propylene glycol seems less toxic and more safe if a leak happens. Reference: Image:

12 Shellac Molecular Formula: C30H50O11
Organic because has both carbon and hydrogen. Description: Shellac is used in a factory as a coating to give it a slight gloss. It’s often used in paints on a consumer basis. When used in factories it’s used as an adhesive. Reference: Category Image:

13 Titanium Dioxide Molecular Formula: TiO2
Its inorganic because it doesn’t contain carbon. Description: TiO2 is mostly used as a white pigment. It’s in everything ranging from paints to food. In this case it’s used to give the Tylenol pill a white color. It’s also very good at reflecting/absorbing light. Because of this it’s used in sunscreens. Reference: Image:

14 Personal Hygiene and Cleaning Products
Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Deep Cleansing Hand Soap Anti-bacterial hand soap. Active Ingredient: triclosan Inactive Ingredients: water, sulfate, propylene glycol, alcohol denat, lauramide DEA, fragrance (parfum), butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), panthenol, retinyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, echinacea purpurea extract, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, triethanolamine, acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, xanthan gum, polyethylene, tetrasodium EDTA, benzophenone-4 methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, diazolidinyl urea, benzyl salicylate, butylphenyl methylpropional, citronellol, limonene, hexyl cinnamal, hydroxyisohexyl.

15 Triclosan (Active Ingredient)
Molecular Formula: C12H7Cl3O2 It is organic because it has a carbon atom. Description: Triclosan is used for its antibacterial properties for humans. Meaning this is used to kill bacteria. It’s used in many hygienic products like soaps, detergents, and toothpaste. Reference: Ingredients Image: whitewashed/

16 Panthenol Molecular Formula: C9H19NO4
It’s organic because it contains carbon. Description: Panthenol is used to treat itching and helps heal the skin faster. It’s also used to treat poison ivy, poison oak, bites, stings, and minor injuries. Reference: whitewashed/ Image:

17 Xanthan Gum Molecular Formula: C12H10O
It’s an organic compound because it has carbon. Description: Xanthan gum is commonly used in household products as a lubricant, cleaning product, and water treatment. In a factory it’s used to ajust the viscosity of a liquid and as a lubricant. Reference: Image:

18 Citronellol Molecular Formula: C10H20O
It’s organic because it has carbon and hydrogen too. Description: Citronellol is used to create an odor. This is why you see it in many aerosol products that produce a “nice” smell. It’s also found in laundry detergent and personal hygiene products. Reference: Image:

19 Limonene Molecular Formula: C10H16
It’s organic because it’s made of carbon and hydrogen. Description: Limonene, probably given away by it’s name gives a smell of lemon. In this case it’s used in the hand soap. It’s used in many personal hygiene products and cleaners to give that lemony scent. Reference: Image:
