In your opinion, what are some values that Americans feel passionate about? Why do you think Americans are passionate about these values?

Values

4. Civics in our lives
Government “by the people” doesn’t mean government by the uniformed.
Good government requires educated citizens.
Main reason for public education is to help young people become more effective citizens.
We can’t have a government “by the people” if the people don’t participate.

5. Why study civics?
Civics: The study of citizenship and government. What it means to be a citizen.
Citizen: Legally recognized member of a country.
Citizenship today differs from country to country. Rights and duties of citizens depend on the type of government.
Government: The organizations, institutions, and individuals who exercise political authority over a group of people.

6. Being an American citizen
Being a productive and active member of society.
Example: Work, school
Member of local community.
Citizen of both country and state
Fulfilling duties and responsibilities as a member of each group/community.
Understand the purpose of government and how it works on all levels.
Understand the economic system, and how it interacts with the government.

7. American Values
Values: Ideas that people hold dear and try to live by.
Equality, liberty, and justice.
Foundation of many of the important rights and freedoms we have.
We are all guaranteed the same rights and freedoms, which are protected by the Constitution and laws.
Laws, system of government, and the American way of life are based on equality, liberty, and justice.

8. Equality Ideally, all people are equal under the law.
Each citizen has the same right to enjoy the many benefits granted to all citizens.

9. Liberty
Your ability to live your life without the government telling you how to live your life.

10. Justice Police to prevent others from violating our rights.
Punish those responsible for violating our rights.

11. Qualities of a good citizen
Voting in elections.
Express your opinion.
Responsible.
Respect/obey the law.
Respect the rights/property of others.
Loyal/proud of their country.
Takes part in communities to improve life.
Active part in their government.
Use natural resources wisely.
Informed on key issues and willing to take a stand on them.
Believe in equal opportunity for all people.
Respect differences, points of view, and ways of life that are different from their own.
