2 What is matter? Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space.
Examples: Your desk, your bed, water in the ocean, the air in the classroom, YOU.

3 They don’t take up space.
What is NOT matter? They don’t have mass. They don’t take up space. Light Heat Sound

4 Particles of Matter Atom – the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element Molecule – made up of two or more atoms joined together chemically

5 Elements Element – a substance made up of just ONE kind of atom

6 Groups of Elements Metals Malleable - easy to shape or form
Conductors - electricity flows through metal wires Ductile - pulled into thin stands/ wires without breaking Nonmetals Dull Can’t be pounded or stretched out Brittle – break easily Don’t conduct electricity well Noble gases Colorless Odorless Some glow when electricity is added (Neon & Argon)
