America is neutral under Woodrow Wilson To not take sides in a disagreement 1915- German U-boat sinks a British cruise ship called the Lusitania killing 128 Americans off the coast of Ireland President Wilson threatens Germany Germany ceases U-boats in fear of US siding with Allies Wilson re-elected in 1916 under slogan “He Kept Us Out of War” US still neutral but continues to trade with both sides known as the “Freedom of the Seas”

Early Germany restarts it’s U-boat attacks (hurting ally trade again) By March, many US ships sunk The British bombard US with Anti- Germany Propaganda and we believe it, especially after we catch German spies attempting to ruin American industries Information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause

The Zimmerman telegram is intercepted by Great Britain A secret message from Germany to Mexico Urges Mexico to attack the US in return for regaining the Southwest US -Congress begins to prepare for war -America officially enters in April 2, 1917 Wilson declares war in order to= “Make the world safe for democracy”

Textile Mills Fabric for military uniforms Railroads Transport supplies to the coasts Farmers Increased crops and livestock “Victory Gardens” sprang up in communities Women volunteer at Red Cross Additional Finance Raise taxes, war bonds, liberty bonds, Rallies, Parades, etc. Biggest contribution= 3,000 Georgians who died in the war
