2 Look at these quotes – what do they mean & what impression do they give?

3 Literary Definition & Examples
Nonfiction is a type of prose that employs the literary techniques usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on persons, places, and events in the real world. The genre of literary nonfiction (also known as creative nonfiction) is broad enough to include travel writing, nature writing, science writing, sports writing, biography, autobiography, memoir, the interview, and both the familiar and personal essay.

4 Element Chart If these are some elements of nonfiction, what would the fiction genre look like in comparison? In other words, how is fiction different from nonfiction? Why is something like Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar not considered nonfiction?

5 Most Popular Forms Autobiography – a writer’s account of his or her own life from his or her POV, focuses on the most important events in his life, usually written by famous people Biography – an account of a person’s life written by another person; involves research, honesty, and being unbiased; tends to involve a famous person or an interesting (for whatever reason)person Memoir – a form of autobiographical writing; writer focuses on his/her involvement with noted people, important events, or both, and their deeper meaning; tone is important because a memoir needs to be intimate

6 Satire Satire is a form of writing that uses irony or wit usually in a humorous way, to comment on or criticize a person, group or event. Usually the intention of satiric writing is to force a change in behavior or to sway public opinion. Its ultimate goal is usually serious. Satire has been used to call attention to dangerous living conditions, hypocritical public figures and business leaders’ illegal actions. A good satire makes its audience laugh and causes them to reconsider an issue. Nonfiction satire is told from the 1st person and uses irony, parody, and caricature.

7 Essays Deals with a single subject and is brief
Formal – writer develops ideas in an impersonal manner, one-by-one Informal – Include anecdotes or humor Persuasive – tries to convince you to share a belief, agree with a position, or take some action Expository – purpose to convey or explain Personal – expresses a writer’s feelings, thoughts, opinions; often informal; allows the writer to explore meanings of events and issues in his own life

9 Studying & Analyzing Nonfiction
Tone – the attitude a writer displays toward a subject Style – the particular way a piece of literature is written; it’s not what is said but how it is said; choice of words, length of sentences, and tone all contribute to creating an author’s style Diction – word choice; diction impacts style and tone
