Wednesday, September 19, 2018 Bandwidth The bit capacity of a channel, usually measured in bits per seconds Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) Optimal: 6-8 Million bits per second (Mbps) downstream Optimal: 512 Thousand bits per second (Kbps) upstream Transmission speeds depends on quality of the phone lines, equipment, distance from the PC to switching office (18,000 ft.) Which one is shaw/telus Simple 2 question survey Shaw or Telus? Why go with one over the other?

Bandwidth Cable modem Optimal: 10 Mbps downstream
The bit capacity of a channel, usually measured in bits per seconds. Cable modem Optimal: 10 Mbps downstream Optimal: 2 Mbps upstream Broadcast Media: Transmission speeds depend on how many people are connected to distribution hub, everyone connected to same hub receives everyone else’s downloads. (What might be problems?)

URL: Access Methods TCP/IP
Wednesday, September 19, 2018 URL: Access Methods TCP/IP TCP/IP – Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol The suite of communications protocols used to connect hosts on the internet. so that they can send information back and forth for a period of time in the form of packets. Packet switching refers to a set of protocols in which messages are divided into packets before they are sent. Each packet can follow different routes to its destination. Once all the packets forming a message arrive at the destination, they are recompiled into the original message.

FTP works in the same way as HTTP is used for transferring Web pages from a server to a user's browser. FTP is most commonly used to download a file from a server using the Internet or to upload a file to a server (e.g., uploading a Web page file to a server).
