2 Intro to Fiction While reading fiction, you should look for some now familiar elements. Plot Narrator (reliable? sympathetic)?) Characters (protagonist, antagonist) Setting Style (figurative language, tone, symbol) Theme

3 Cathedral Look at Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral.”
In small groups, identify those elements of the story on a single sheet of paper with all group members’ names at the top. Then, on the same sheet of paper, answer the following questions: What literally happens in the final section of the story? What happens symbolically? Does the narrator seem to be changed? How and why? What does he mean when he says he feels as if he is not “inside anything”? What does “blindness” symbolize in our culture? How does Carver’s story reinforce or undermine that symbolism?
