2 Lesson 71 Week 20 Picture Recognition Chart
9th Grade * Earth Systems Water Reservoirs of the Earth

3 You Don’t Have to write The Self Starter this week

4 Today’s Learning Objective
After this lesson the students will be able to understand where the water on the earth is located, how much water can be found in those reservoirs and why we need to protect these water reserves.

5 Announcements Acuity Test is this Wednesday.
Portfolio 3 is due Thursday.

6 Homework Study everything we have learned this term for the Acuity Test. Start putting your portfolio 3 together.

8 Where is all the Water On Earth Going? 6:31 min

9 Directions After you take the notes and draw the pictures you will be given a test. Each question is worth 10 points. You will need to write on your test paper what the picture represents and what the percentage or fraction of water can be found there.

10 Picture Recognition Chart [10]
Mr. Petersen will pass out a blank sheet of type paper. Put a [10] in the upper right hand corner. Take the notes and draw a picture by the notes that will help you remember what the name of the picture is. Be prepared to take a test with just the picture. On the test you will have to write down the name of the object and the percentage of water that resides there.

11 Ocean- 97% of the water on earth can be found in the oceans.
Draw something that will help you remember this picture for the test. Ocean- 97% of the water on earth can be found in the oceans.

Draw something that will help you remember this picture. 2. Icecaps/Glaciers- 2% of the earth’s water can be found in the Icecaps/Glaciers”.

13 Groundwater- .7% (7/1,000) of the earth’s water can be found here.
Draw something on your paper that will help you remember this picture.

14 (Call on a student to read this information:)
Earth is a water planet. More than 75 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. Powered by the Sun and geothermal energy, Earth’s water cycles from one source to another. Our human culture is centered around the use of water sources. Earth’s water resources are divided into various storage areas called reservoirs.

15 Draw something on you notes that will help you remember this picture.
4. Atmosphere- .3% or 3/1,000th of the earth’s water is found in the atmosphere.

16 Have a student read this paragraph:
Utah is the second driest state in the United States. It receives an average of 13 inches of precipitation each year. Utah’s use and conservation of these water sources has had and will have a major influence on Utah’s growth and development. The Utah Division of Water Resources has several excellent internet sources available to determine and explain the locations of Utah’s water reservoirs, and how Utah’s water can be conserved Check out this web site.

17 5. Freshwater lakes- There is about
5. Freshwater lakes- There is about .01% of the earth’s water found here. Draw something on your notes that will help you remember this picture.

18 6. Saline Lakes and inland seas- Only take up
6. Saline Lakes and inland seas- Only take up .01% (1/10,000th) of the earth’s water.

19 7. Rivers- Only make up about .001% of 1/100,000 of our earth’s water.

20 In class oral review For the quiz you need to remember what the picture was, how much water can be found there, or anything else you can remember form the notes. You will be given points for how much you can remember. So, do the best you can. (70 points possible) Use this test to review orally before you take the actual test.
