5 Environmental Management System
EcoCampus Three year programme Structure of audit and assessment ISO14001 EcoCampus was designed and developed by the HE sector for the HE sector. Based at Nottingham Trent University. The development of an Environmental Management System is the next step in the development of our work. The programme provides a systematic methodology for managing institutional impacts on the environment with the development of an Environmental Management System. Phased and modular approach working through set criteria for each award with recognition for institutions in reducing environmental impact. EcoCampus provides a framework for continual improvement. The Platinum Award is equivalent to the international standard ISO 14001, similar to systems for managing health and safety and quality. Time to broaden out to the entire University. Require the support of many academic and professional services colleagues. Bronze and silver – assessed remotely. Gold and Platinum – physically assessed.

6 Senior management support is vital, especially at the initial promotional stages of integration.
Typical Environmental Management Activities Include: Auditing Client and supplier collaboration Communication, training and awareness Monitoring and measurement Reduction in resource consumption while controlling waste. Pollution prevention and risk management, maintaining legal records.

7 Success Commitment and involvement Strong communications
Good flexible planning Clear Performance Improvement Goals Detailed monitoring procedures Integration with existing management systems An Environmental Management System can become an effective and powerful tool for the University. Reiterate the points above to show that the development of an EMS concentrates on the systems in place at the University. The EMS will of course tie into plans developed by Property & Facilities to change the physical aspects of the University i.e. efficient boilers and lighting systems.

8 Benefits Management of environmental impact Management of financial impact Reputational risk Curricular links and gain Stakeholder engagement Research and knowledge transfer The structure offered by EcoCampus allows for all environmental aspects to be assessed, acted upon and monitored. The computer package offered will help to control and maintain concise data management procedures. Including legislative requirements. Translate requirements set within the Corporate and Strategic Strategies. Demonstrate to external partners and funders that we are taking our environmental commitment seriously. Also demonstrating that we operate efficiently in terms of resource management and use, including water and energy consumption. Current energy spend is £1.6m annually. CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, £75,000 carbon tax paid in 2010/11. 56% of UK HE’s are working towards ISO out of 73 using EcoCampus. Developing an EMS is not mandatory. Yet. Good corporate governance. Pulls together wider Health & Safety and Procurement requirements.
