The colonies were home to diverse religious and ethnic groups Social distinctions were blurred compared to Europe.

1765-Stamp Act passed taxing newspapers & pamphlets Colonist protested “No taxation without representation.” 1767-Townshend Acts passed forcing colonist to pay for the expense of maintaining the British Empire.

1770-Boston Massacre. British soldiers fired on a crowd of protesters killing 5. 1773-Colonist protest tax on tea with the Boston Tea Party

1774-Coercive/Intolerable Acts to create economic suffering triggering the assembling of colonies in Philadelphia. This meeting became known as the First Continental Congress.

Colonist Declare their Independence April War begins with shots at Lexington and Concord. July 4, 1776-Colonist declare their Independence from Great Britain through the Declaration of Independence.

Disadvantages The American cause looked hopeless, 1/3 of colonist were loyalist to England. Americans lacked Military resources, money, and strategic plans

Advantages We were fighting on our own soil (thick woods and poor roads) Strong leadership: George Washington

France Provides Support 1777-when Americans won the Battle of Saratoga, France joined our cause followed by Netherlands and Spain. 1781-British army surrenders at Yorktown, Virginia. France had blocked the Chesapeake Bay.

This allowed Washington's troops to surround the British. 1783-Britain signs Treaty of Paris ending the war and recognizing our independence American Revolution Continues

19 A New Constitution The Articles of Confederation was Americas 1st Constitution. However leaders got together and drafted the U.S. Constitution in 1787. It established a federal republic with power divided by 3 branches.
