This meeting became known as the First Continental Congress.

April War begins with shots at Lexington and Concord.
July 4, 1776-Colonist declare their Independence from Great Britain through the Declaration of Independence.

1777-when Americans won the Battle of Saratoga, France joined our cause followed by Netherlands and Spain.
1781-British army surrenders at Yorktown, Virginia. France had blocked the Chesapeake Bay.

This allowed Washington's troops to surround the British.
1783-Britain signs Treaty of Paris ending the war and recognizing our independence

19. A New Constitution
The Articles of Confederation was Americas 1st Constitution.
However leaders got together and drafted the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
It established a federal republic with power divided by 3 branches.
