1 Elephants…skyscrapers…aeroplanes...
Think BIG Elephants…skyscrapers…aeroplanes... Start with the idea that there are a lot of big things in the world – Elephants…skyscrapers…aeroplanes... giraffes... Once the children have finished contributing ideas, you can tell them you know something else that’s big. Something we’re going to do at our school. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

2 Explain what this means.
Inviting our mums, dads, carers and other people who are part of our school to come in for nice things to eat and drink. And raising money to help people affected by an illness called cancer. This will be one of thousands of coffee mornings held across the UK for Macmillan.

3 Communicate the purpose.
Why has your school decided to do the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning? (If someone in your school community is currently affected by cancer, or you are holding your coffee morning in memory of someone you all knew, you could talk about this here.) How will the money you raise be spent to help people affected by cancer, through Macmillan Cancer Support? There’s information on our website – and the following slides – to help you here.

4 A charity is a group that helps people (or sometimes animals) who are ill, in trouble or need help. They can only do this thanks to the money that people like you and your family give. Macmillan Cancer Support are one of the UK’s biggest charities.  They help people affected by an illness called cancer. The charity has been around for a long time. This is Douglas Macmillan. Douglas’ father sadly died of cancer when he was a young man. Douglas was so upset by his father's illness that he decided to start a charity to try and help other people with cancer. That was just over 100 years ago (1911). Since then, Macmillan Cancer Support has helped millions of people affected by cancer.

5 Macmillan fund nurses Macmillan nurses care for people all the way through their cancer treatment. These are extra-special nurses who help people with an illness called cancer – giving them medicine, helping to make them feel better and looking after them. They also support the friends and family of the person living with cancer.

6 Macmillan answer questions
They have a support line which anyone can call. Their experts answer questions or worries or just listen if someone needs to chat.

7 Macmillan answer questions
If someone has cancer they may have to take some time off work and pay for extra things like travelling to hospital appointments. Macmillan experts talk people through their money worries and tell them what benefits they can get. They can also give people money for things like heating bills or a much needed family holiday.

8 Macmillan help people And Macmillan's team of volunteers help people living with cancer with everyday things like shopping or a lift to hospital.

9 Macmillan Raise Money Macmillan is a charity. They can only pay for these services thanks to fantastic supporters like our school who donate money or fundraise. Their biggest fundraising event is called the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

10 Coffee Mornings raised £25 million last year
Coffee Mornings raised £25 million last year! This was enough to fund 474 Macmillan nurses and help thousands of families affected by cancer. This year we’re hoping to help Macmillan raise even more money so they can help even more families.

11 Our Coffee Morning Add your details here…
End by making sure pupils know all the things you’re going to be doing: When and where your Coffee Morning will be. Whether they’ll be having a no-uniform day. What their involvement will be, including any special classroom activities they can look forward to or roles they can volunteer for.
