Exploring War tactics By Hailey Wallace

Strategies for Land Fought from lines of trenches and supported by artillery and machine guns Mostly static in nature, mobility was minimal. The end result to trench warfare mainly resided with a Stalemate   Another technique used was the artillery barrage. The army used short bursts to kill as many of the enemy as possible in a short time.

Strategies for Water  In 1915 when the Germans began using submarines, called U-Boats, to sink ships from freighters to passenger liners. One of the most famous sinking was a U-Boat attack on the unarmed passenger ship, the  Lusitania.

Strategies for Air  Armed with machine guns, fighter planes could cause a great deal of damage.  Their goal was not to shoot enemy pilots but rather to shoot down enemy planes. If the pilot died as a result, that was war.  Zeppelins were huge manned balloons, filled hydrogen to make them fly.

New technologies  Barbed wire was used to help stop men attacking and getting into the trenches. A poison gas, a type of mustard gas, was invented in World War I. To fight this, the gas helmet was invented. During World War I, a water-cooled machine gun was invented

Techniques The war against Germany was a land war. The war against Japan was a naval war. USA used underground mines to blow up their enemies trenches. They also used guerrilla warfare to sneak up on them.

Describe how the fighting would have mostly occurred
Each side would dig a trench then try to shoot from their trench then they would go into no mans land and try to shoot the opposing side while they are in the trench. The fighting mainly occurred from alliances many of the countries weren’t involved in the war it was only because of the other countries they had allies with forced them to go to war with them.

What would the experience have been like for those fighting in that arena?
Many of the fighters experienced shell shock Lots of death occurred Very stressful and intense situations Many of the trenches had dead bodies, rats, and bacteria so people would be getting sick Traumatic experiences

Discussion Question Why did France wear such bright clothing during the war? Why didn’t people wear helmets?

Discussion Question What would happen if one the countries that had an alliance decided that the war was not a good idea and just decided not to fight? Could this lead to even more wars?
