2. What is an Ode?
Definition: a lyric poem in the form of an address to a particular subject, often elevated in style or manner and written in varied or irregular meter.
It is generally emotional, formal, and
long/elaborate

3. History of an Ode
Odes started in the Greek era with the intention of song.
The creation of Odes is accredited to Pindar.
It was comprised of three major parts: the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode.
The Renaissance revived odes into spoken words.
Another revival in the Romantic Period.

4. Types of Odes
Pindar Ode- choral poems that were meant to be sung at public events. It contains three triads; strophe, antistrophe and final stanza as epode, with irregular rhyme patterns and lengths of lines. (Heroic)
Horatian Ode- These odes dwelled upon interesting subject matters that were simple and gave pleasure to senses. They are generally informal, meditative and intimate.
Irregular Ode- is without any formal rhyme scheme and structure. Gives freedom and flexibility to try any types of concepts and moods.

Apostrophizes a person or a thing: the ode is always in the form of an address to an absent person or thing.
Expresses lofty and noble sentiments.
Very formal and serious tone with elevated style.
Structure made up of alternating long and short lines.
Longest of lyric poems- varies in length
Universal and elevated theme, along with emotions

6. Ode to Joy Written in 1785 by Schiller and published in 1786
It quickly became very popular and written into many songs (Beethoven's being the most popular)

It is prevalent in nature
