4 Proctor Caching for TestNav Introduction
Go to: Topics Proctor Caching is Pearson-supplied software that is used in conjunction with TestNav to reduce bandwidth requirements and accelerate the delivery of test content. Proctor Caching: allows you to precache test content to your local network before a test, What is Proctor Caching? Proctor Caching is Pearson-supplied software that is used in conjunction with TestNav to reduce bandwidth requirements and accelerate the delivery of test content. It allows you to precache test content to your local network before testing. It reduces the burden on your Internet Service Provider (ISP) by eliminating redundant requests for test content. Cached content is encrypted and stored locally. 5 Proctor Caching – The Network
Go to: Topics This diagram illustrates the network traffic differences between using and not using Proctor Caching. Without Proctor Caching, as demonstrated on the left, multiple redundant copies of the same test are downloaded over the district’s ISP connection while students are waiting for the test to load. This heavy use of bandwidth not only affects how quickly tests load for students, but also the available bandwidth for all other Internet-related activities within the district. With Proctor Caching, as seen on the right, districts will precache one copy of each test and tests will be served to the students from the Proctor Caching machine. This minimizes redundant requests for test content over the district ISP connection, loads tests faster for students, and minimizes the effect of computer-based testing on district bandwidth utilization. Districts have the flexibility to decide where to implement Proctor Caching in the network environment. Based on local network consideration, districts can implement Proctor Caching machines at the district, school, or classroom level. Proctor Caching is highly recommended.

6 Proctor Caching Requirements
Go to: Topics Proctor Caching Requirements Proctor Caching runs on Windows and Mac OS X. It does not require an underlying server-based operating system. TCP Ports include: 80 (Internet), 4480, and (Local Network). Proctor Caching requires a fixed internal IP address. For setting up an upstream proxy, refer to the Set Up and Use ProctorCache section in the TestNav 8 User Guide. Proctor Caching runs on Windows and Mac OS X. It does not require an underlying server-based operating system. It can run on desktop class hardware and a desktop class operating system, which gives districts flexibility on what machines they use for Proctor Caching. Proctor Caching uses TCP Port 80 for communication between the Proctor Caching machine and the Pearson servers, and ports 4480 and 4481 for communication between testing workstations and the Proctor Caching machine. Because testing workstations must know a predictable network location for the Proctor Caching machine, Proctor Caching requires a fixed internal IP address. Those districts that require Internet traffic to pass through an upstream proxy server will have to configure Proctor Caching to point to their proxy server. For details on setting up an upstream proxy, refer to the Setup and Use ProctorCache section in the TestNav 8 User Guide.

7 Proctor Caching Installation
Go to: Topics To install the Proctor Caching software, go to Download the Windows or OS X Proctor Caching installer. Run the installer and Start Proctor Caching if it is not already started by the installer. Follow the steps through AnywhereInstall. Select Proxy Server Information, Choose Installer Folder, shortcut links, and Start Proctor Cache.

8 Manage TestNav Configurations
Go to: Topics Once proctor caching has been installed, sign in to the PARCC PearsonAccessnext website to manage TestNav Configurations. Go to Setup > TestNav Configurations. To view existing TestNav Configurations, select the arrow next to the Search button and select “Show All Results”. Under the task drop-down; Create/Edit TestNav Configurations, Delete TestNav Configurations, and Import/Export TestNav Configurations are available. For more information on Import/Export TestNav Configurations, go to the Import or Export TestNav Configurations section of the PearsonAccessnext User’s Guide.

9 Create a New TestNav Configuration
Go to: Topics To create a new TestNav Configuration: Select Create/Edit TestNav Configurations from tasks drop-down menu. Click Start. Enter in the required fields indicated with an asterisk. Configuration names must be unique within the PARCC PearsonAccessnext website for your state. Select Precaching Computer Override to avoid possible test interruptions. When this box is selected, test content will be downloaded from Pearson test servers if TestNav cannot reach the proctor caching computer. Next, under the Organizations drop-down menu to select the school or district that’s being configured. Identify the Proctor Caching computer. In the “Default Precaching Computer” section, enter a computer name. The computer name will be the name that displays when selecting a caching machine during test session creation. If you will be Proctor Caching, provide the internal network IP address of the caching machine and the port number, which unless modified is 4480 for Pearson-supplied Proctor Caching. The IP address should be a static address to ensure students can access content during testing. Also note, the computer selected for Proctor Caching should not be a student testing machine. Check “Uses Pearson Precaching Software.” If you will not be using a Pearson-supplied caching solution, simply leave the IP Address and Port fields blank; you will still need to complete the next steps for TestNav. For Response File Backup Locations, it is recommended that a Secondary Location be specified. The Response File Backup Locations must be writeable by students and can be a network share on school networks or a shared location on the local computer. Tablets and mobile devices can use SFTP type locations to configure a secondary location. Click Create.

10 Configuration Identifier
Go to: Topics Configure TestNav Setup You can find App Check on the TestNav Sign In page. App Check confirms that the device or computer can connect to TestNav and that it is configured to start TestNav in kiosk mode. An optional configuration identifier may be entered to validate additional TestNav configurations from the assessment management system. After creating a TestNav Configuration, a Configuration Identifier will be displayed under the Precaching Computer. The Configuration Identifier can be used with TestNav App Check to validate TestNav Configurations. You can find App Check on the TestNav Sign In page. 

11 PearsonAccessnext and Precaching Setups
Go to: Topics TestNav configurations work from school to district. A school precaching machine will take precedence over a district. If a school does not have a setup, then the district setup will apply. An organization can only have one configuration, however, each configuration can have multiple precaching computers setup. The precaching computer dropdown menu in the Session Details screen will allow you to specify a specific precaching computer for the session. Once you have added your configuration, there are some important details to understand about how precaching setups work inside of PearsonAccessnext. TestNav configurations work from school to district. A school precaching machine will take precedence over a district. If a school does not have a setup, then the district setup will apply. An organization can only have one configuration, however, each configuration can have multiple precaching computers setup. The precaching computer dropdown menu in the Session Details screen will allow you to specify a specific precaching computer for the session.

12 TestNav Configuration Details
Go to: Topics Configuration Details allows you to: edit the configuration name, add additional organizations to the configuration, check Precaching Override, edit or add Precaching computers to organization. The Configuration Details screen shows you the entire configuration. From this screen you have the ability to: edit the configuration name, add additional organizations to the configuration, check Precaching Computer Override, edit or add new Precaching computers to the organization; this allows you to have multiple TestNav save locations and/or Precaching computers within one configuration. Click Save when you are done to return to the Configuration Details screen.

13 Add Precaching Computers
Go to: Topics Additional precaching computers can be added for backup or to accommodate large numbers of concurrent tests. Add Precaching Computers to existing TestNav Configurations by clicking Add. Enter the Computer Name, IP Address, and Port. Verify the Response File Backup Locations. Click Add. Back on the Configuration Details screen; the configuration entered first is identified as the “Default computer used for sessions” for the organization. When a new test session is created, it will automatically be set to the default Proctor Caching computer for an organization, unless changed to another.

14 Precaching by Test Go to: Topics Precache By Tests can be done by going to Setup > Precache by Test. Select up to 10 tests to cache. Check the Precache Servers and click Precache. Once TestNav Configurations are setup, users can begin precaching test content. Typically, proctor caching is available 2 weeks before the beginning of a test administration. Go to Setup > Precache by Test and select up to 10 tests to cache. Select the Precache Server to download test content to. Click Precache.

15 Precaching Content Go to: Topics
This will bring up a popup window with a similar Precache button, that will allow you to initiate the caching process. The popup window automatically closes after you click the Precache button. A second tab or window will appear shortly. This window will display the Proctor Caching – Tests tab.

16 Proctor Caching Diagnostics
Go to: Topics Select the Tests tab for information about test content and caching status. Select the Clients tab to monitor client connectivity. Select the Settings tab to change the proctor caching computer software. We will now review the Proctor Caching Diagnostics interface. Once installed, the Proctor Caching software includes access to a diagnostic monitoring web page to assist district personnel with visibility to the status of cached content and monitoring caching connections from testing workstations. Select the Tests tab for information about test content and caching status. Select the Clients tab to monitor client connectivity. Select the Settings tab to change the proctor caching computer software.

17 Tests Tab Go to: Topics On the Tests tab content is displayed at the Test and Form level. Functionality is available to Refresh, Reload, or Purge selected test content if necessary, and requires a password. Clicking on a test name will display the Test Details screen which displays individual items in a test.

18 Tests Tab – Status Not Loaded – Content is not cached
Go to: Topics OK – Content is cached Not Loaded – Content is not cached Waiting… – Loading the content Loading… – Loading the content Failed to load content – There was a failure to load content MD5 Check Invalid – MD5 comparison failed MD5 Mismatch – MD5 comparison was successful but files did not match In general any status in red is a critical problem The Tests tab provides status indicators for each item of cached test content. An OK status means the content has successfully cached. The yellow status indicators appear when the content is in the process of being cached. Not Loaded means the content is not cached. Waiting… means the content is in the queue, waiting to be loaded, and Loading… means the content is currently loading. Red status indicators indicate problems with cached content. Failed to load content means there was a failure to download content. Proctor Caching also performs an MD5 check once an item has been cached to compare the test content on the Pearson servers with the cached item. The MD5 check should show that the items are identical. MD5 Check Invalid means the MD5 comparison could not be completed successfully. MD5 Mismatch means the MD5 comparison was completed but the files did not match. In general, any status in red is a critical problem. Any content with a red status should be checked and reloaded. 19 Clients Tab Go to: Topics Clicking on a computer name will display the Client Details screen, which displays information regarding a particular computer connecting to Proctor Caching. Clients that have connected to TestNav are listed by IP address. The Clients tab offers a quick view into client computer connections. Each computer can be clicked to bring up an individual Client Details screen. It provides visibility to which testing workstations have requested test content from the proctor caching server. Clients that have connected to TestNav are listed by IP address.

20 Clients List Tab – Status

21 Settings Tab To change the ProctorCache password:
Go to: Topics To change the ProctorCache password: Click on the Settings tab. Enter the old password, and then enter the new password twice in the required fields. Click Submit.
