1 Data Migration Made Easy
Fast, Assured Enterprise-Wide Migration — Guaranteed Greetings. I’d like to introduce you to Vicom, a provider of fabric-based SAN solutions that help companies like yours to realize the benefits of SANs. If you manage storage today, you know that managing it is a huge challenge. According to Gartner Group, most companies are doubling their storage every months, while increasing their budgets by about 2-3% annually — imposing a kind of Moore’s law of storage consumption at the expense of the IT staff. SANs, of course, are touted as one of the ways out of this dilemma, promising things like seamless consolidation, high availability, and instant data recovery. Reality, however, doesn’t really bear this out — unless, you’ve tried offerings from Vicom Systems. PS Spring Training February, 2008

24 Vicom Migration Process – Migration
Action Items (Migration day) Vicom – Coordinate server shutdown (Best Practice). Vicom – Migrate data from source storage to destination storage. NetApp – Update HBA BIOS, HBA Driver, FC Driver, MP Driver, OS fixes,. Vicom – Verify Migration completion and perform post-migration tasks (label Solaris disk) NetApp – Configure FC switch and destination storage to allow server access destination storage LUN. NetApp – Bring-up the server (Best Practice) and Verify user data. NetApp – Ship Migration tool back to Vicom. Fast Migration Migration Start Timer Protection (1 minute if fabric attached). Tool (4-engine) is able to migrate data at 1.2 TB/hour, Scalable to match storage speed. Manage Migration by reordering, aborting the migration, alter migration thread and speed. 24

25 Vicom Migration Process – Migration
Best Practice – Windows Boot LUN Migration Update HBA BIOS, if needed. Connect Server HBA to destination SAN (if source SAN is different from destination SAN). Zone (FC) server HBA and destination storage ports together. Configure LUN masking so that server can access LUNs from the destination storage. If there are multiple paths to destination storage, connect only one path and temporarily disconnect all other paths. Configure HBA BIOS setting such that HBA can recognize boot LUN from destination storage (by WWPN). Bring-up server; boot from destination storage. Install proper multipath driver (Snap Drive) for the destination storage, then shutdown the server. Reconnect all other paths to the destination storage, and bring-up the system again. Run chkdisk to verify the file system. Examine log files (system, application) for errors and warnings. Start applications and verify user data. 25

33 Wells Fargo Case Study 33

34 Wells Fargo - Forbes-ranked 41st largest bank/financial services provider
Situation 40 servers 10+ TB , Technology refresh from Xiotech to NetApp Migrate data from production site in Minneapolis to Shore View, MN Requirements Outage window < 6 hours, Schedule (many small migrations) < 3 months Simple solution: no agents, Solution test before actual implementation Legacy server (Netware), boot LUN migration and Xiotech support Success Migrated data from 47 servers data in 11 sessions and <60 days, able to maintain BCV data Provided a Proof of Concept (POC) to eliminate any compatibility risk Flexible, detailed planning and design (recipe) Focused teams (Wells Fargo, NetApp & Vicom) Hundreds of man-years of project planning, data migration experience and IP leveraged (Best Practices) Use of NetApp “swing box” to provide additional schedule flexibility and data protection Allowed a tech refresh of server hardware and software in parallel with the data migration Ability to do migrations remotely and on off hours Ability to “spoof” data migration engine into fabric to minimize environmental changes before and after migration of data Minimal hardware to “seed” start of project “Really good news. Thank NetApp and Vicom so very much. Excellent work and tremendous effort.” - Partner “Everything went very well, and Vicom handled their part of the work without any problems. It was obvious that Vicom people are knowledgeable and experienced (in data migrations), and their software tools and DME appliance all look to work very well. I have nothing but good things to report, and I would strongly recommend Vicom for other SAN migrations.” - Solution Architect, NetApp

42 Why Vicom Data Migration? Customer
Vicom DMS Array-based migration Host-based migration Comparison for typical mid-sized migration: 30 servers/25 TB total Faster 2.5x-6x than customer DIY (host or array based migration) Guaranteed on time Most Comprehensive to meet any situation – Online, Offline, Onsite, Remote (on demand) Zero risk (fall back), We have never lost data. Most Economical Proven in hundreds of enterprise migration, 5+ PB of data

43 Why Vicom Data Migration? NetApp PS
We make change easy by migrating data fast and painless Winning storage sales from competing situation – 100% of migration from EMC, HP, LSI, XioTech Storage. Simplifies selling and service planning (eliminates a customer problem) Saves customer money (lease/maintenance extensions and software support) Gets customer up and running faster (earlier services billing) Faster close: greater sales and service productivity And NetApp PS make 30%+ money to boot!

45 Additional Benefits No Host Software Agent or Driver required – No configuration changes. External Boot LUN – Windows, AIX, Solaris, SuSE, Netware, … DAS to SAN – FCAL, SCSI & SSA SAN to SAN – No ISL; Cisco, Brocade, QLogic, McData, … WWN Spoofing – No source storage configuration required (Save money and time). 45

46 Additional DMS Service Data Sanitization
Federal Regulations requires sensitive or classified information must be cleared prior to returning of storage system. Gramm-Leach-Bliley (GLB) for financial institutions Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACT) of 2003 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Sarbanes-Oxley for publicly traded companies. Ensure crucial information like company, employee and customer information is securely sanitized. When to do data sanitization? Retiring storage Returning leased storage Upgrading storage Redeploying storage 46

47 Additional DMS Service Data Sanitization – Why?
47

48 Additional DMS Service How Vicom Data Sanitization Works?
Conforms to U.S. Department of Defense requirements for sanitizing disks. DoD recommends, “Overwriting with a pattern, and then its complement, and finally with another pattern. Sanitization is not complete until all six passes of three cycles are completed.” Example, " Write to disk with pattern ‘ ’ " Write to disk with the complement pattern ‘ ’ " Write to disk with another pattern ‘ ’ Vicom Data Sanitization Software does the above process two times with different patterns. Pattern can be set by customer. 48

49 Additional DMS Service Why Vicom Data Sanitization?
Host based does not sanitize the data reliably. Deleting a file merely removes its name from the directory structure’s special disk sectors. User data remains in the drive. Reformatting a disk drive clears the file directory and severs the links between storage sectors, but the user data remains and can be recovered until the sectors are overwritten. Host based tool can not remove OS protected data. Spare drives are internal to storage system, not visible to OS. Vicom data sanitization service guarantees data destruction Removing compliance liability. Conforms to DoD guidelines. Sanitize Open System data and Mainframe data. Fastest method. Support any interface - FC/SCSI/SSA/SATA. 49

50 Additional DMS Service LUN Stacking
Disk Volume Re-layout (LUN Stacking) Consolidate multiple small LUN to fewer large LUN. AIX LVM, Solaris Disk Suite, Solaris VERITAS, HP-UX LVM, NCR 50
