Diction, Mood and Tone AP English Language Fazzini

2 Diction A writer’s choice of words, phrases, sentence structures, and figurative language, which combine to help create meaning. Formal diction consists of a dignified, impersonal, and elevated use of language complex words and lofty tone. Middle diction=correct language usage less elevated than formal diction reflects the way most educated people speak. Informal diction represents the plain language of everyday use, and often includes idiomatic expressions, slang, contractions, and many simple, common words. Poetic diction--deviates significantly from the common speech and writing of the time words have a “supposedly inherent” poetic quality

5 Tone The author’s implicit attitude toward the reader or the people, places, and events in a work as revealed by the elements of the author’s style. Tone may be described as any attitudes and feelings that human beings experience Angry Sad Bitter Nostalgic These are just a few examples!

6 Mood a mood or atmosphere is the feeling that a literary work conveys to readers.  Mood is created through the use of plot, character, the author’s descriptions

7 Mood vs. Tone Tone The author’s attitude, stated or implied, toward a subject. An author’s tone can be revealed through choice of words and details. Mood  The climate of  feeling in a literary work. The choice of setting, objects, details, images, and words all contribute towards creating a specific mood. For example, an author may create a mood of mystery around a character or setting but may treat that character or setting in an ironic, serious, or humorous tone

8 Let’s try it out on a poem
With your partner, read, analyze and annotate the following poem What is the TONE of the poem? What is the MOOD of the poem? What is the subject of the poem? What kind of person is the speaker? Do you identify with the speaker? How does the speaker feel about the subject?
