What will we discuss? Goals for this session Provide guidance on developing chapter programs aligned to Competency Model and SHRM BoCKTM Engineer your chapter programs to Align to Competency Model Align with SHRM BoCKTM Count for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP recertification credit Practice! Practice! Practice! NANCY: Thank you, Dorothy, for the kind introduction! Here’s what we’ll be covering in today’s session. We hope to take some of the mystery out of planning and connecting your chapter programs to the Competency Model and the BoCK so you can offer recertification credits with your programs. We’ll also talk about becoming a preferred provider, and offer some opportunities to practice analyzing existing programs to make those connections and creating new programs to engineer the connections right from the start! Practice makes perfect, so most of this session, you will be doing the work – practicing by using a few exercises we hope you will find fun, helpful and informative! 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS’ SUMMIT

6 Your Role as Recertification Provider
Your go-to source: The Recertification Provider Guide Benefit: Award PDCs without prior approval from SHRM for a 2-year period Must meet qualifications, apply, be accepted, follow guidelines Be familiar with what “counts” SHRM BoCK greatly expands the scope of professional development activities that will qualify for recertification credit SHRM BoCK links to competencies so topics that align with competencies, but are not standard HR topics can be used in programs. E.g.: Leadership program, courses in statistics, business discipline courses Extemporaneous comments by JIM -There are resources available -The benefit of being a recertification provider is based upon alignment with the SHRM BoCK and the SHRM Competency Model. 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS’ SUMMIT

7 How do you marry this all together to make soup?
Let’s hear from you! Let the workshop begin! Activity 1: Who has already engineered a program? SHARE! Table activity to reverse engineer programs offered by chapters represented at your table Activity 2: Brainstorm NEW Program ideas What career level is targeted for program? On which BoCK functional area is the program focused? What BoCK Key Behaviors are targeted? Which competency is covered? Activity 3: Practice engineering NEW ideas into programs Everything from Activity 2 PLUS Write the learning objectives Write a pithy yet intriguing description Assign time, credits, speaker, etc. THIS SLIDE HAS AUTOMATIC ANIMATION. NANCY: I hope you’re ready to work with us now to become familiar with the process we use to help demystify linking the content of programs to the BoCK and the Competency Model. We’ll be working together collaboratively in this “workshop” portion of the session. We will ask you to participate in 3 activities. The first one focuses on programs you have already held at your chapter or conference meetings. We’ll ask you to talk amongst yourselves at your tables first to share information about some of the programs you’ve done, whether you linked them to the BoCK, offered credit and identified the competency or competencies covered by the program. Then we’ll ask you to share a few of your team’s “favorites” with the group. The goal is to help you embrace the successes you’ve already had in this area, and to leverage the expertise at your own tables to help untangle some of the stickier issues in program development you may have encountered this first year of designing programs that link to the BoCK and the Competency Model. Activity 2 will be an opportunity for you to brainstorm new ideas, and we’ve provided you with multiple copies of a template in the middle of your tables. We wanted to give you a framework for quickly and easily capturing all the details you’ll need to share with potential participants AND provide to SHRM with the program details to support your Preferred Provider Status. Activity 3 builds on Activity 2, and in this activity, we again encourage you to have your team mates help you write the program descriptions and provide what we call the rest of the Nitty Gritty Details for your new program. We also want to make the offer right here and now to collect all your new ideas, type them up and upload them to the VLRC. Would you like us to do that? 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS’ SUMMIT

8 Let’s take a walk--Activity 1
Your Mission: Reverse Engineer an existing program to link to Model and SHRM BoCK Think about a program you held at a chapter meeting this year Use the sticky notes on your table Record this information on the sticky note General topic Target audience Functional Area from BoCK Key Behaviors from BoCK Behavioral Competency from Competency Model SHARE with your table then with the whole group! Designate one person to place the sticky notes on the flip chart ANIMATION FOR THIS SLIDE OCCURS BY CLICKING EACH NANCY: We want to leverage the knowledge in the room by asking you first to accept this mission: Reverse engineer an existing program Things to think about to get you started: in this first year of offering programs for certified professionals to use for recertification credit: Did you create programs from scratch and then find a speaker? Did you find a speaker and then match their presentation to the BoCK? Do you offer short programs or long programs? Did you work with a committee or did the program chair handle the linking to the BoCK and competency model? Think of a program that was very well-received by the audience. Does everyone have a program in mind? Now we’ll take a few minutes to reverse engineer you existing program. Work individually for 5 minutes Share with your group for 5 minutes Report out to larger group INSTRUCTIONS: We realize there may be multiple programs because many chapters are represented at table Use one Sticky Note for each program Record the general topic covered in the program and the level of program you’re targeting: Everyone or Advanced only? What Domain from the BoCK is covered? Is the program a People, Organization, Workplace or Strategy program? Does the activity cross multiple areas? Using SHRM BoCK document on your tables, pages 18-38, which key behaviors are addressed by the program(s)? Refer to the competency model details at the beginning of the BoCK document (pages 7-15), what behavioral competency or competencies (proficiency standards) are covered by the program? Report Out Follow up questions. What did you find simple about this activity? What was the most challenging part of this activity? How might you be able to use this activity with your programming committee to link the competencies to the BoCK in order to offer recertification credit? How many of you identified multiple areas of the BoCK or multiple Competencies covered by your programs? Did this surprise you? Why or Why not? Now we’ll have an activity to create new programs that identify multiple competencies and BoCK categories! Get ready to have some fun! 2015 SHRM VOLUNTEER LEADERS’ SUMMIT
