1 Matter This PowerPoint contains information on
Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter The FOUR states of matter Properties Examples Add to your bellwork CORNELL NOTES with the information this presentation. It is J# 11 “Notes on Matter” Turn them IN! When you are done, go over your Fusion (J#10). *Pay close attention to page 120 (vocabulary)!

2 Watch your TIME! This is NOT all you are supposed to do today.
Spend 20 minutes (TOPS) on this PowerPoint. OR you will have HW!

3 4 STATES OF MATTER Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

4 STATES OF MATTER Based upon particle arrangement
Based upon energy of particles Based upon distance between particles

5 Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter
States that atoms and molecules possess an energy of motion (kinetic energy) that we perceive as temperature. Translation--As you know, atoms and molecules are constantly in motion, and we measure the energy of these movements as the temperature of that substance. This means if there is an increase in temperature, the atoms and molecules will gain more energy (kinetic energy) and move even faster. Fancy Theory Name for explaining that molecules move faster when heat is added, huh?

6 STATES OF MATTER SOLIDS
Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.

7 STATES OF MATTER LIQUID
Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. Liquids have an indefinite shape and a definite volume. Higher temp than a solid!

8 STATES OF MATTER GAS Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely. Gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume. Higher temp than a liquid

9 Will everything just be a gas?
But what happens if you raise the temperature to super-high levels… between 1000°C and 1,000,000,000°C ? Will everything just be a gas?

10 STATES OF MATTER PLASMA
A plasma is an ionized (charged) gas. A plasma is a very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields. Plasmas, like gases have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

11 STATES OF MATTER LIQUID PLASMA SOLID GAS
Tightly packed, in a regular pattern Vibrate, but do not move from place to place Close together with no regular arrangement. Vibrate, move about, and slide past each other Well separated with no regular arrangement. Vibrate and move freely at high speeds Has no definite volume or shape and is composed of electrical charged particles

12 The Sun is an example of a star in its plasma state

15 Turn in your CORNELL NOTES…..so yes, this means to do a short summary!
Check your fusion answers to J#10…States of Matter. *Pay close attention to page 120 (vocabulary)! Complete your “The Atom” and “Periodic Table” Fusion for HW. DON’T forget that we skipped a lesson, so be sure you have torn out the correct pages ( ).
