2 Today’s Class In today’s lesson, you will learn how to use comparative adjectives to make descriptions. You will also be able to discuss the similarities and differences between people, places and objects using comparative adjectives.

3 Grammatical Structures
ST + to be + adjective than ST ST + to be + more adjective than ST ST + to be + less adjective than ST ST + to be + adjective + infinitive ST + to be + not as + adjective + as ST Examples English is easier than French. Gold is more expensive than silver. Silver is less expensive than gold. It is good to meet you. This car is not as old as that car. It is + adjective + infinitive + ST than + infinitive + ST It is better to be rich than to be poor.

1st person I am (present) I was (past) 2nd person You are (present) You were (past) 3rd person He/she/it is (present) He/she/it was (past) To be verb (plural) 1st person We are (present) We were (past) 2nd person You are (present) You were (past) 3rd person They are (present) They were (past)

5 Describing People Arnold is taller than Danny Danny is shorter than Arnold. Arnold is not as short as Danny. Danny is not as tall as Arnold.

6 Places Seoul Daejeon Seoul is bigger than Daejeon.
Seoul is not as small as Daejeon. Seoul is more expensive than Daejeon. Daejeon is smaller than Seoul. Daejeon is not as big as Seoul. Daejeon is less expensive than Seoul.

7 Objects Diamond Ring Plastic Ring
A diamond ring is more expensive than a plastic ring. A plastic ring is less expensive than a diamond ring.

8 Computer Games In what ways can you compare computer games?
Graphics: LOL has better graphics than SC. Characters: LOL has more characters than SC. Action: LOL is more exciting to play than SC. (ST is + adjective + infinitive + than ST.) Difficulty: LOL is more difficult to play than SC.

Watching a TV Watching a movie Which one is more exciting: watching a movie at home or watching a movie at the cinema? Watching a movie at the cinema is more exciting than watching a movie at home. It is more exciting to watch a movie at the cinema than to watch a movie at home.

10 money health Which one is more important: being rich or being healthy?
Being healthy is more important than being rich. It is more important to be healthy than to be rich.

11 spaghetti ramen Which one is easier to make: spaghetti or ramen?
Making ramen is easier than making spaghetti. It is easier to make ramen than to make spaghetti.

12 math science Which one is more difficult to learn: math or science?
Learning science is more difficult than learning math. It is more difficult to learn science than to learn math.

13 skiing bungee jumping Which one is more dangerous: skiing or bungee jumping? Skiing is more dangerous than bungee jumping. It is more dangerous to go skiing than to go bungee jumping.

14 KTX bus Which one is a faster way to travel: by KTX or by bus?
Traveling by KTX is faster than by bus. It is faster to travel by KTX than to travel by bus.

15 KTX bus Which one is a less expensive way to travel: by KTX or by bus?
Traveling by bus is less expensive than by KTX. It is less expensive to travel by bus than to travel by KTX.

16 Naver Google Which one is a easier to use: Naver or Google?
Using Google is easier than using Naver. Using Naver is easier than using Google. It is easier to use Google than to use Naver. It is easier to use Naver than to use Google.

17 Your Turn You should have a sheet of paper that has a list of pairs on it. Work in pairs and make comparisons of the following items. Make two comparisons for each pair and make two sentences for each comparison. Example: An elephant to a mouse An elephant is larger than a mouse. A mouse is not as big as an elephant. An elephant is more intelligent than a mouse. A mouse is not as intelligent as an elephant.

18 Conclusion Today, you have learned how to use comparatives to describe the differences between people, places and objects. You have observed comparatives being used to compare two people and some common objects, and you have successfully used comparatives to compare two computer games.
