1 Academic Year 2016 – 2017 Accelerated Pre-Calculus
Welcome Academic Year 2016 – 2017 Accelerated Pre-Calculus

2 About Me

3 Basic Info Hometown: Montego Bay, Jamaica W. I – Graduated Undergrad Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Technology 2006 – Graduated Graduate School Master’s Degree in Education & Minor Math

4 Teaching Info Algebra Algebra 2 Euclidean & Informal Geometry
Previously taught courses: Algebra Algebra 2 Euclidean & Informal Geometry Mathematics 1 Mathematics 2 Mathematics 3 Analytic Geometry Accelerated Analytic Geometry B /Advanced Algebra Currently teaching courses: A.P. Statistics Accelerated Pre-Calculus Pre-Calculus

5 Course Information

6 Course Description Accelerated Pre-Calculus is the third in a sequence of mathematics courses designed to ensure that students are prepared to take higher‐level mathematics courses during their high school career, including Advanced Placement Calculus AB, Advanced Placement Calculus BC, and Advanced Placement Statistics. The standards in the three-course high school sequence specify the mathematics that all students should study in order to be college and career ready.

7 Course Description Additional mathematics content is provided in fourth credit courses and advanced courses including, calculus, advanced statistics, discrete mathematics, and mathematics of finance courses. High school course content standards are listed by conceptual categories including Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Conceptual categories portray a coherent view of high school mathematics content; a student’s work with functions, for example, crosses a number of traditional course boundaries, potentially up through and including calculus. Standards for Mathematical Practice provide the foundation for instruction and assessment.

8 Course Goal STEM Accelerated Pre-Calculus students upon successful completion of this course will be prepared for their fourth year of math (AP Calculus and/or AP Statistics). Students will take a midterm (December) and a final exam (May). Your Student Learning Objectives (SLO) Test counts as 20% of course average.

9 Types of Course Assignments
Homework Assignments Daily Checks Quizzes Tests Final Exam

10 Homework Assignments Homework will be given almost every class. I will check it at least twice a week.

11 Skills Checks Daily Checks
Skills Checks are graded assignments given after each concept. These online assignments will be given online on Daily checks are in-class assignments given after each concept. These will usually be just like homework assignments and you may use your notes and homework for assistance.

12 Quizzes Quizzes are in class assignments given after every 2 or 3 concepts. You may not use any notes, etc. for assistance.

13 Tests Tests are given after every unit.
Final Comprehensive Exam will be at the end of academic year covering all topics in course.

14 CDA Expectations Stands for Common District Assessment
Every Douglas County student enrolled in a high school math class will take the same exact test for that class. These grades entered in the gradebook cannot be curved. CDA’s are designed by teachers in the county. Very important CDA’s are used to place students in remediation or enrichment for ILT

15 Student Learning Objectives (SLO)
SLOs is a cumulative test given to students at the beginning and end of the year to determine student growth in understanding of topics specific to Accelerated Pre-Calculus.

16 Grading Plan Formative Assessments – 30% (Skills Checks, Daily Checks, Homework Assignments) Summative Assessment – 50% (Common Unit Assessment, Common District Assessment, Projects) Student Learning Objectives/Final– 20%

17 Class Rules & Procedures

18 Class Layout 1st Warm – Up: 10 - 15 minutes
2nd Instructions: Bulk of the class time 3rd Practice Problems: last 20 minutes of class 4th Closure: summarizing of concept 5th Homework presented

19 Class Rules Follow all LSHS Rules & Policies
Be respectful to your instructors and your peers. Be responsible for your own learning. Arrive prepared and on time. Keep workstations clean and neat. Electronics are not allowed in class.

20 Class Consequence Chart
Refer to Discipline Protocol on wall

21 Your Space & My Space Your spaces in the classroom are the student station, turn in table, and your individual desk. My spaces in the classroom are EVERYTHING else. Do not touch any part of my space unless requested by instructor.

22 Class Expectations & Policies

23 Class Policies No make up (or “do-overs”) for any assignment
Extra credit will be given at the teachers discretion throughout the academic year. If you’re absent and missed any assignments, it is your responsibility to come after school to complete assignments or zero will be given. Late assignments are not accepted. Cheating on any assignment will result in a zero as the final grade and a discipline referral. All students are expected to seat in assigned seats at ALL times.

24 Course Expectations Regular attendance in the class is important for success in this rigorous course. Consistently bring necessary materials to class. Completing ALL homework assignments are essential for retaining concepts. Participate in class discussions and activities Question anything that is not fully understood

25 Homework Expectations
Homework will be given every night. Usually about 8 to 12 problems (not that much) Should not take more than 45 minutes Some of the problems will be easier than others. If you have trouble with more than one or two problems, you SHOULD me immediately. If you just show up and say “I just did not understand” or “I just could not do it”, you will receive a zero.
