1 Emerging Sources Citation Index

2 Please maintain your standards….after you add my journal
We heard from a number of funders, evaluators, partners and customers that they needed more content to suit their needs More data to support research assessment and analysis More coverage of local content with significant regional importance Concern that we may be missing early stages of emerging fields and trends But…we also heard...please remain selective and provide thought leadership by continuing to distinguish the most impactful journals. How can we achieve these two opposing objectives?

3 So we added a third objective…
As a result, the Web of Science is known as the worldwide source for top tier scholarly research published in journals with consistent high impact across the global scholarly community. To evaluate and select the best scholarly journal content available today for coverage in Web of Science. Thomson Reuters has built lasting partnerships with the global scholarly publishing community. We work together to improve the quality of scholarly communication everywhere in the world Provide the worldwide publishing community with objective standards useful in building world-class publications. Expose regionally important content as well as identify new and exciting journals that do not yet meet our strict criteria for inclusion in the SCIE, SSCI, and AHCI Add transparency to our selection process and empower our users Ensure we are reflective of the global body of science and scholarly activity CONFIDENTIAL--For internal use only. Do not distribute.

4 The building of Emerging Sources Citation Index
First: Increase global perspective and footprint Increasing editorial staff to include regional editors—7 outside North America over the next 3 years. Second: Liaison with governments, funders, KOLs and publishers to ensure we are EVALUATING emerging trends and  scientific developments beyond the high impact literature Third: Build the collection with the same comprehensive and meticulous indexing that we use in the Flagship editions to provide the most comprehensive coverage of peer reviewed journal literature available anywhere Web of Science Vs. We have not compromised the strict and rigorous editorial process for inclusion in SCIE/SSCI/AHCI Our competitors Mila Cahue- Regional Editor based in Barcelona

5 JOURNAL SELECTION CRITERIA Journal Publishing Standards
Editorial Content International Focus Citation Analysis Peer review Ethical publishing practices Meets technical requirements (XML / PDF) Has a scholarly audience requested this content? Does this journal target an international audience or specifically a regional audience? Is international representation among authors and board members at an appropriate level for such a journal? Total citations Recent citation activity Author and editorial board members’ citations in the literature Integration of the journal into the literature over time How does this journal compare with covered journals of similar scope? Is this subject already well covered? Will this journal enrich WoS with novel content? Timeliness of publication International editorial conventions English-language metadata The Journal Selection Process has four main areas of interest: Publishing Standards Editorial Content International Focus Citation Analysis The four minimum criteria have always been a part of our selection process – The only difference is the transparency -- we are indexing content in Web of Science while it continues being evaluated. That rigorous evaluation covers many areas Red = ESCI minimum requirements

6 Evaluation Criteria: One continuous process with two phases
(Quick Assessment for ESCI) PHASE 2 (Full Assessment – SSCI/AHCI/SCIE) Accelerated Evaluation: content must exhibit: Peer Review Ethical Publishing Practices High Interest to a scholarly community (Scholars, researchers, funding bodies, research administrators) The ability to meet our technical requirements SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI (Same as today) Fully Evaluated content must exhibit: Highest Journal Publishing Standards Timeliness Globally Accepted Editorial conventions English Bibliographic Information Peer Review Strong Editorial board Ethical Publishing Practices Regional Diversity and Global Collaboration Appropriate Diversity of Editorial Board Appropriate Diversity of Authorship Significant Global Impact relative to its field (citation or novel contribution) Consistently high interest to the global scholarly community (Scholars, researchers, funding bodies, research administrators) The ability to meet our technical requirements “Deselection” 10%-12% vs. 64% Creation of a review process separate from our existing review process. Accelerated Review Criteria: Note: Content added to this file is still eligible for being selected for inclusion in the SCIE, SSCI, or A&HCI. All content selected for the SCIE, SSCI, and A&HCI will continue to be evaluated according to our current journal selection process.

7 Benefits to our publishers
Journal content  is discoverable  and citable while being monitored for inclusion in the SCIE/SSCI/AHCI Real-time insight into your journals’ citation performance Increased transparency on the Thomson Reuters evaluation process

8 ESCI by the numbers Over 4,100 titles have been selected as of December 5, 2015 45% of selected titles are open access Acceptance rate 62% (as of late November) vs % for the 3 flagship editions (Scopus claims 54% acceptance) 40% of ESCI is from outside NA and Europe 81% of ESCI is from outside of NA, vs. 63% for SCIE/SSCI/AHCI, vs. 54% for Scopus 54% of titles in product now are NOT in Scopus (64% of selected titles) CONFIDENTIAL--For internal use only. Do not distribute.

9 ESCI in the publishing headlines….

We are pleased to be part of the new emerging sources index which is part of an established portfolio of products from Thomson Reuters which provides a thorough review of information on research trends and topics across the sciences.” Acta Crystallographica Section E: Crystallographic Communications Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal-Elsevier Also Emerald, Wiley, Springer have all had titles boast about acceptance into ESCI
