OVER 50 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN CITATION INDEXING, ANALYSIS AND METRICS In 1955, Dr. Eugene Garfield revolutionized research with his concept of citation indexing and searching, giving birth to the Science Citation Index ® Web of Science is the highest quality and the largest citation database with over 1 Billion cited references from 1900 to 2015 We only select the most important and influential journals from science, social science, and arts & humanities 1961 2015

THE JOURNAL SELECTION PROCESS: MAIN OBJECTIVES 1.To evaluate and select the best scholarly journal content available today for coverage in Web of Science. As a result, the Web of Science is known as the worldwide source for top tier scholarly research published in the best international and regional journals. 2.Provide the worldwide publishing community with objective standards useful in building top tier, world-class publications according to the highest ethical standards. Thomson Reuters has built lasting partnerships with the global scholarly publishing community. We work together to improve the quality of scholarly communication everywhere in the world. 6

7 Thomson Reuters Journal Selection Process for Web of Science: Four Points of Evaluation Journal Publishing Standards Editorial Content International Diversity: Authors, EAB Citation Analysis Timeliness of publication International Editorial Conventions English language Bibliographic Information Peer Review How does this journal compare with covered journals of similar scope? Is this subject already well covered? Will this journal enrich WoS with novel content? Does this journal target an International or Regional audience? Is international representation among Authors and EAB members at an appropriate level for this journal? Total Citations: Integration of the journal into the literature over time Impact Factor: Recent citation activity Author, EAB citations in the literature. Citation metrics have meaning only in the editorial context appropriate for the journal. Arts & Humanities journals are exceptional English full text may not be required Novel, well focused content (often regional) is essential Citation analysis plays a much smaller role.

International Diversity and Institutional Collaboration Greater International Diversity and Institutional Collaboration are characteristic of Higher Impact Journals View of Diversity and Collaboration in –4 Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Journals with ~ 160 Citable Items (Articles and Reviews) in 2013 –4 Neuroscience Journals with ~65 Citable Items (Articles & Reviews) in 2013. Is Diversity an indicator of potential citation impact?. 8

9 Journal Impact > Intl Diversity > Collaboration 4 Neuroscience Journals with ~65 Citable items in 2013 Analysis of 100 Most Cited 2011-2012 Articles & Reviews Higher Impact Journals: Greater International Diversity and More Collaboration 2 YEAR Journal Impact Factor

10 Journal Impact > Intl Diversity > Collaboration 4 Neuroscience Journals with ~65 Citable items in 2013 Analysis of 100 Most Cited 2008-2012 Articles & Reviews Higher Impact Journals: Greater International Diversity and More Collaboration 5 YEAR Impact Factor

Journal Impact > Intl Diversity > Collaboration 4 Biochemistry & Mol Biology Journals with ~160 Citable items in 2013 Analysis of 100 Most Cited 2011-2012 Articles & Reviews 11 Higher Impact Journals: Greater International Diversity and More Collaboration 2 YEAR Journal Impact Factor

Journal Impact > Intl Diversity > Collaboration 5 Biochemistry & Mol Biology Journals with ~160 Citable items in 2013 Analysis of 200 Most Cited 2008-2012 Articles & Reviews 12 Higher Impact Journals: Greater International Diversity and More Collaboration 5 YEAR Impact Factor

REGIONAL CITATION INDEXES Providing Discovery, Access, and Metrics for Regional Content

17 Increased Visibility of Chinese Research to the World Chinese Science Citation Database Coverage of over 1,200 top scholarly publications from China Integrated platform to discover, identify, assess and demonstrate the impact of Chinese research from top scientists, journals, and centers of excellence Supports fast growing research output with expanded coverage of regional journals

GROWTH OF CHINESE RESEARCH OUTPUT IN WEB OF SCIENCE Accelerate growth of Chinese research in Web of Science Core Collection since the 2009 launch of the Chinese Science Citation Index 18 Launch

19 INCREASED VISIBILITY OF RUSSIAN RESEARCH TO THE WORLD (JANUARY 2016) Russian Science Citation Index Extends coverage beyond core collection to regionally important research Coverage of up to 1,000 top scholarly publications from Russia Integrated platform to discover, identify, assess and demonstrate the impact of Russian research from top scientists, journals, and centers of excellence.

Russian Journal Impact 20

JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR Gold Standard evaluative indicator of journals Assigned by Thomson Reuters to the journals captured in Web of Science Updated annually and published in Journal Citation Reports Average citation counts of papers published in a particular year 21 Garfield, E. “Citation indexes for science: A new dimension in documentation through association of ideas.” Science, 122 (3159), p.108-111, July 1955.

22 What Does Impact Factor Represent? Impact Factor represents the average number of times recent articles in a specific journal were cited in a particular year. What Does it Measure? Impact Factor measures the citation performance of the journal as a whole and not of any specific article or author published in the journal.

23 2014 Journal Citation Reports –Science Edition Biochemistry-Moscow* Impact Factor: 1.353 5-Year Impact Factor: 1.269 *Published by Maik Nauk/Interperiodica/Springer Web of Science / JCR View RUSSIAN JOURNAL EXAMPLE (JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR)

How Can I Improve My Journal? 1.Active recruitment of high-impact authors and articles 2.Offering better service to authors 3.Boosting the journal’s media profile 4.More careful article selection Thomson Reuters can help. New England J Med Ann Intern Med BMJ JAMA Lancet Med J Australia Can Med Assn J M. Chew, E. V. Villanueva, and M. B. Van Der Weyden, Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine 100 (3), 142 (2007).

How Can I Improve My Papers? 1.Add international and influential co- authors and contributors 2.Submit to both regional and global journals (Use Web of Science and JCR as a guide) 3. Publish in English and use English polishing services 4.User internationally accepted bibliographic conventions; use best-in- class reference software, e.g. EndNote Thomson Reuters can help.
