2 Introductions: Joanna Cinnamon
Wife, Mother to 2 children, whom we homeschool Registered Nurse for 20+ years A homeschool and natural health blogger at ClarkAndLuciLearn.com Passionate about natural health and creating a safer, chemical-free home (Take a moment to replace my picture with your own square image by right-clicking on it and selecting “Change Picture…” Add your own personalized bullet points.) Get to know your audience: Ok! So tonight we are going to be talking a lot about essential oils. Who here is brand new to essential oils? (Wait for the raise of hands.) Now who here uses essential oils every day? (Wait for the raise of hands.) Great! Before we begin, let me introduce myself. (Replace my story with yours: My name is Joanna. I am a happily married Mom of 2 young children. I began my journey towards a healthier lifestyle a little over 2 years ago. I like to point out that I am a work-in-progress, so I want to make it clear that I am not an expert. I do, however, know for certain that when we adopt a healthy lifestyle and provide the body with the support it needs, it will maintain vibrant health. You don’t need to be an expert to make better choices! I was initially led to essential oils a couple of years ago when I started researching how I could manage and support my health in a more independent and natural way. With 2 young children, I was also aware that I needed to start eliminating the toxic chemicals that I was using in our home. Not knowing anything about essential oils and the importance of quality, I ordered some bottles off of Ebay for $6 each. They did absolutely nothing. I was a little disgusted and thought to myself – “Well, that’s what you get for trying something natural!” A couple of months later, I was invited to attend an Essential Oils class, a lot like this one. That class changed my life. In that class, I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils and I learned about the difference that quality and purity make. That very night I took some samples home and began using them. The results were very impressive, but I was still skeptical. For months I convinced myself that everything was a coincidence. Finally after about 6 months, I began to realize that the results I was seeing were not coincidences. From that time, I have been a passionate advocate for essential oils and natural health! Since starting with Young Living, we have experienced incredible benefits to our bodies, our minds and our spirits. I am happy to report that we have not had a sick doctor’s visit ONCE in the past several years and we have been genuinely blessed by Young Living’s business opportunity.)

5 What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils (EOs) are very concentrated, potent liquids produced by herbs and plants, that are essential to the life of the plant. They work similarly on human beings. EOs are adaptogenic and fat-soluble, so they can cross into the skin and even into the blood-brain barrier, which can actually affect neurology and stress levels. So let’s begin! What are Essential Oils? Essential oils are very concentrated, very potent, volatile liquids produced by trees, herbs, plants and flowers. They are called essential oils because they are essential to the life and well-being of the plant. They also work really well in humans. Essential oils are adaptogenic, meaning they respond to what the body needs and can create different responses in each person. They are fat-soluble, so they can cross into the skin and even into the blood-brain barrier, which can actually affect our brain and stress levels. Plants actually make 2 types of oils: EOs and fatty oils. The difference between essential oils and fatty oils is that essential oils circulate within the plant and are protective for the adult plant. Fatty oils do not circulate and are present to protect the seed. Essential oils can cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the blood stream. Fatty oils do not. They are too big to pass through our skin. Fatty oils are not aromatic, for example, you don’t smell Olive oil at the back of the room when I open it. We use fatty oils along with our essential oils to dilute the oil if needed.

8 Essential Oils in History
EOs are not new and are not a fad. EOs were used long before Christ, by the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, the Chinese, and the Romans EOs have been used historically to maintain health, to detox the body, for healthy and younger-looking skin, for mental and emotional relaxation, for spiritual cleansing and much more Essential Oils in History EOs are not new and are not a fad. EOs were used long before Christ, by the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks, the Chinese, and the Romans EOs have been used historically to maintain health, to detox the body, for healthy and younger-looking skin, for mental and emotional relaxation, for spiritual cleansing and much more.

9 How to Use Essential Oils
We are going to sample and experience several different oils tonight. Be aware that EOs always create cellular change and may have a detoxifying effect. To help the body flush out any toxins, drink plenty of water! If you get a light headache or feel dizzy, take a break! When sampling, do not shake the bottles or touch the top of the bottles. Do not get EOs in your ears or eyes. How to Use Essential Oils First things first: We are going to sample and experience several different oils tonight. Be aware that EOs always create cellular change and may have a detoxifying effect, depending on your body chemistry. To help your body flush out any toxins, be sure to drink plenty of water! If you get a light headache or feel dizzy, take a break! When sampling, do not turn the bottle upside down and shake it. Do not touch the orifice reducer. Just wait patiently for a drop to come out. Allow one drop to fall into your hand, rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale deeply. Do not get EOs in your eyes or ears. If you do, or if you experience some heat or irritation, let us know. We have some carrier oil available if needed.

10 Essential Oils in Scripture
Proverbs 21:20 “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise.” There are over 600 references to EOs in the Bible. In Biblical times, essential oils were used on a daily basis. Essential Oils in Scripture Read Proverbs 21:20 “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.” In the Bible there are over 600 references to essential oils and the aromatic plants from which they were extracted. The fact is, in biblical times, essential oils were used on a daily basis. You may notice that although the Bible mentions the oils, it rarely discusses their usage in detail. This is probably because they were so common. It could be compared to a novel written today, mentioning coffee. We don’t necessarily describe how it is prepared and sourced, simply because it is so common, we assume everyone already knows.

11 The Holy Anointing Oil Exodus 30:22-38
This is an actual recipe given by God to anoint the temple and his designated Priests. The recipe would yield 6 gallons of oil (84% EO, 16% olive oil) What is anointing? Exodus 29:7, James 5:14, Psalms 133:2 We anoint ourselves, our family and those whom we share our oils with. The Holy Anointing Oil Read Exodus 30: “22 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. 26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, 27 And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, 28 And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. 29 And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. 32 Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. 33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people. 34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: 35 And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: 36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy. 37 And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the Lord. 38 Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.” This is actually a recipe given by God with the exact amounts of each essential oil and even the carrier oil. If we break this down into modern day measurements, this would make 6 gallons of oil. It would be about 84% essential oils and 16% olive oil. Why would they need so much? Because God had them anoint EVERYHTING! They didn’t just use a little drop here and a little drop there. They anointed EVERYTHING, EVERY DAY! Animals were sacrificed here, which could create a very pathological environment. But there is no recording of epidemics. These oils were sanitizing. The oils were more than ceremonial – it was for the protection of the people. One of my favorite stories about the Holy Anointing Oil is in Numbers 16: “46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from theLord; the plague is begun. 47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the plague was stayed.” Aaron puts on the Holy incense and stands between the sick and healthy during the plague and prevents more from dying. Optional: Pass around Exodus II, which contains all 4 of the holy anointing oil (plus 4 other oils) What is “Anointing”? Exodus 29:7 “Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.” James 5:14 “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” Anointing is mentioned 156 times in the Bible. Anointing is taking an oil and pouring over the top of a person’s head, setting them apart. If you look anointing up in a biblical dictionary, it will actually say massage or rubbing. In Hebrew the word is very similar to “massage”. Psalms 133:2 “It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments.” This shows the amount of oils used. It was running off their beards, running off their garments and onto the ground. They used a lot of oil - they were using buckets – and it was VERY expensive! They didn’t have alternatives like the pharmaceuticals that we have today. Oil was a BIG deal! They anointed EVERYTHING. God said if you anoint it, it makes it holy as I am holy. Nowadays we are so careful and frugal with our oils. We are so worried about “using too much.” The skeptics warn of their dangers – but in Biblical times, these same oils were literally poured onto people’s heads. For those of us who use essential oils – I don’t know about you, but everyday, we are literally taking our oils and we are anointing our children, our spouses, our friends, ourselves. This is should not be minimized. It should be intentional and prayerful. When you put your oils on others, you are anointing them.

12 Essential Oil Chemistry
Each EO contain different constituents that affect the cells of our bodies in different ways: Phenols & Phenylpropanoids: clean off the cell receptor sites Sesquiterpines: work to deprogram damaged DNA Monoterpenes: reprogram damaged areas of DNA Essential Oil Chemistry One drop of an EO contains 40 million trillion molecules. We have 100 trillion cells in our bodies, so one drop of an EO can cover every cell in our body with 40,000 molecules. Each EO contain different constituents that affect the cells of our bodies in different ways: Phenols & Phenylpropanoids: work to clean off the receptor sites to improve communication, allow for better connections Sesquiterpines: deliver oxygen to cells. This component works on rebuilding cells (especially the brain) by deprogramming areas of DNA damage, deleting what should not be there, then reprogramming that DNA but will also deprogram areas of damage. Each of us has a genetic code, but this is not all set in stone. You can actually build on this every day, based on how you live, your environment etc. We actually have the ability to get a new clean slate! Monoterpenes: can reprogram miswritten and damaged areas of DNA. Genesis says we are created in God’s image, so why do we have disease? Because we live in a stressful environment, full of chemicals and toxins. Our bodies have been forced to adapt to the environment that we are in. Monoterpenes know how to reprogram because they work in the electromagnetic field, drawing from your original, perfect blueprint. You have a genotype – as in you are genetically a woman and you can’t change those genetics. You may be genetically programed to have brown hair – you are not going to take an essential oil and wake up as a blond the next morning. That is your genotype. Your phenotype is how you exhibit your genetic code and is based on your environment. For example, no one is genetically programmed to have diabetes, but you may be genetically predisposed with a weakness in certain areas, your digestive tract is slower and your pancreas is weak. When you put yourself in a certain environment you will then exhibit certain symptoms.

13 The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture
Young Living has created a kit called the Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture Contains 12 of the most popular oils mentioned in the Bible The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture Open the Kit and pass each oil around the room as you discuss it

14 Aloes / Sandalwood Essential Oil
Numbers 24:6, Psalms 45:8, Proverbs 7:17, Song of Solomon 4:13-14 John 19:38-39 This was the blend of EOs for Jesus’ burial. It was equivalent to about 100 lb in weight, which would be worth about $150,000-$200,000 today! Very high in sesquiterpines Uses: Traditionally been used as incense in religious ceremonies, for meditation. Very uplifting and relaxing. Stimulates the brain to produce melatonin to help you sleep. Used for centuries for its’ skin revitalization properties. Aloes / Sandalwood Numbers 24:6 “As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the Lord hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.” Psalms 45:8 “All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.” Proverbs 7:17 “I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.” Song of Solomon 4: “13 Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, 14 Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices.” John 19:38-39 “38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. 39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.” This is talking about the blend used for the burial of Jesus, which would be worth about $150,000-$200,000 today! This shows their respect and honor for Jesus and also that they were extremely rich! It is very high in sesquiterpines. Aloes or Sandalwood has traditionally been used as incense in religious ceremonies and for meditation. It is very uplifting and relaxing and stimulates the brain to produce melatonin to help you sleep. It has also been used for centuries for its’ skin revitalization properties.

15 Cassia Essential Oil Exodus 30:24, Ezekiel 27:19, Psalms 45:8
Same family of plants as Cinnamon, Uses: Supports the immune system and the body’s natural defenses, supports proper circulation, supports maintenance of a normal blood sugar Cassia This oil is from the same family of plants as Cinnamon. It smells like Cinnamon, just much stronger. Exodus 30:24 “22 Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25 And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.” Ezekiel 27:19 “Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market.” Psalms 45:8 “All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.” This oil has been used to support the body’s natural defenses – our immune system, it also supports proper circulation and maintenance of a normal blood sugar. I would not put this in your mouth because I’ve read of it being used as a local anesthetic - meaning if you swallow some, it paralyses your larynx and you won’t be able to talk for about 20 minutes.

16 Cedarwood Essential Oil
Leviticus 14:1-7, 49-52, Numbers 19:6 This was probably the first oil to be distilled. Uses: Cedarwood was used by Egyptians and Sumerians for 5000 years for embalming ritual purposes. It energizes the brain, so is fantastic to use when studying for a test. It can also be used to help clear unknown fears and mental blocks when it comes to learning. It’s powerful scent creates a relaxing, calming and comforting environment. Found in EO blends such as Brain Power, Grounding and Highest Potential Cedarwood This is probably one of the first oils to be distilled. Leviticus 14:1-7 “And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, 2 This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: 3 And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper; 4 Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: 5 And the priest shall command that one of the birds be killed in an earthen vessel over running water: 6 As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water: 7 And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field.” This is the cleansing recipe for leprosy using Cedarwood and Hyssop. In verse 14 they even talk about reflexology points: “ And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.” In reflexology, right ear related to resolving issues with parents, thumb and toe are trigger points for clearing unknown fears and mental blocks for learning, and right big toe is a point for clearing addictions and compulsive behavior. Leviticus 14: “49 And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop: 50 And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water: 51 And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times: 52 And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet: 53 But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean. 54 This is the law for all manner of plague of leprosy, and scall, 55 And for the leprosy of a garment, and of a house, 56 And for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot: 57 To teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean: this is the law of leprosy.” Numbers 19:6 “And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.” Again, a very similar cleansing procedure, this time using a heifer. Cedarwood was used by Egyptians and Sumerians for 5000 years for embalming ritual purposes, and all kinds of cleansing and purifying uses. Who here has a cedar chest? This type of wood is used specifically to keep the moths away (insecticidal), it also works to energize the brain, so use it to study for a test, then use it during the test to help memory recall. This oil is the highest in sesquiterpines and its powerful scent creates a relaxing, calming and comforting environment Found in Brain Power, Grounding and Highest Potential

Psalms 51:3-7 “3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Here, Hyssop is used in the story of King David and Bathsheba. King David saw her bathing and decided he wanted her, so he had her husband killed and then married her. Through it all, King David never acknowledged his sin until the prophet came to him. I think he actually seemed shocked, but was fully repentant and asked God for spiritual cleansing and purifying using Hyssop. Historically Hyssop was thought to be spiritually purifying and used in cleansing oneself from sin, evil thoughts and bad habits. This actually has some scientific basis – Hyssop contains 50% ketones which act like Phenols and cleanse receptor sites, contains 5-10% sesquiterpines which have been shown to delete addictions and compulsive behavior, contains 20-30% monoterpenes which reprogram DNA and can restore normal function (Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”) It is also known to be helpful in meditation, supports the respiratory system, and is emotionally balancing Found in EO blends White Angelica, Awaken, Harmony, Exodus II, Relieve It, and Immupower

21 Myrrh Essential Oil Genesis 37: First and most frequently oil mentioned in the Bible, Joseph is sold to Myrrh traders Matthew 2:11 Given to Mary when Jesus was born Esther 2:12 Esther was massaged with Myrrh for 6 months to prepare her for marriage to the King Uses: One of the most versatile oils, was used historically by pregnant and new mothers to facilitate calmness, skin rejuvenation, was applied to the umbilical cord to protect the baby, very emotionally balancing, gives feelings of security and peace, purifying, restorative, revitalizing and uplifting Myrrh: Myrrh is the first and most frequently mentioned oil in the Bible In Genesis 37 we can read the story of Joseph and his brothers. His older brothers hated him and decided to kill him, but instead at the last minute they changed their minds and threw him into a pit. Genesis 37:25 “And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.” The brothers sold Joseph to the traders who then sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Ironically when a famine came to their land and the brothers had to go to buy food from Pharaoh, they took Myrrh as a present. Genesis 43:11 “And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds” We just spoke about how Myrrh was given to Mary and Joseph at the birth of Jesus: Matthew 2:11 “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.” In Esther, we read how Esther had a year-long process to undergo in order to marry the King. Esther 2:12 “Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors, and with other things for the purifying of the women.” Myrrh was known to be very emotionally balancing, giving feelings of security and peace, especially to pregnant and new mothers. It supports healthy skin and was often applied to the umbilical cord of a new baby to provide protection. It is one of the most versatile oils, being very purifying, restorative, revitalizing and uplifting.

25 Spikenard Essential Oil
Matt 26:6-7, Luke 7:36-68, Mark 14:3, John 12:1-3 One of the last oils used on Jesus before his arrest God sent 3 different women to anoint Jesus before he was arrested, to mentally and physically prepare him for his crucifixion. Uses: Very relaxing and soothing oil for the skin Found in: Animal Scents Shampoo, Egyptian Gold, Exodus II, Humility, Inspiration, LavaDerm Cooling Mist, Oola Balance, The Gift Spikenard This is one of the last oils used on Jesus before his arrest. It seems like God sent no less than three different women to anoint Jesus in the weeks before his crucifixion. Matt 26:6-7 ”6 And when Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table.” Mark 14:3 ”And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head.” Luke 7: ”36 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.” John 12:1-3 ”Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead,[a] whom He had raised from the dead.2 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. 3 Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.” Spikenard is very relaxing and soothing for the mind and body. It would have been a great oil to mentally and physically prepare Jesus for his crucifixion.
