1 God’s Anointing Psalm 133:1-3 1A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! 2It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; 3As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

2 Psalm 133:1-3 1A Song of degrees or song of Ascent- Pilgrim songs when the Jews were traveling ‘up’ to Jerusalem for annual festivals. (Key thing to remember is that it has everything to do with worshiping God.

Psalm 133:1 1A Song of degrees or song of Ascent- of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!  Ironically-the words were written by ‘a man of war’. David observed God’s Worship service. Unity amongst those who believed in the in the one true God.  They were redeemed by the same Savior  They were looking forward to the same heaven.  They served the same Master  They were subject to the same trials, temptations, and sorrows 3

Psalm 133:2 2I (the unity) is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;  Overflow of oil represented the consecration (set apart) the whole nation Israel.  Aaron- Anointed (consecrated/set apart-to make holy) Israel’s first High Priest-Far from perfect-set apart by God.  Precious ointment: Specifically made God. The oil was poured upon Aaron.  Exodus-30:30-33And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. 31And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations 33Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.  Skirts of his Garments: Garments specifically made by God. He gave the tailors ‘wisdom’ to make the garments prior to Aaron’s consecration. 4

God’s Anointing Psalm 133:3 3As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.  Both Images-Anointing oil poured out on Aaron’s head and the dew of Mount Hermon falling on Mount Zion anticipate the pouring out of the Holy Spirit-Thus the unity of believers.  Mount Zion chosen for the erection of the temple-the dwelling place of God-God’s presence. 5

God’s Anointing Psalm 133:2 2It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; Gal 2:20 20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Mark 14:3,6,8 3While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 6"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 8She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. 6

7 God’s Anointing New Testament Era 1 Peter 2:9,10 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. All Christians are a royal priesthood, dedicated to serving before God in his spiritual temple, the heavenly tabernacle. When Peter says a chosen people, a royal priesthood, he is not repeating himself. He is saying that if you are made holy by the blood of Christ, you are more than a chosen people (as was all Israel), you are that very small portion of the chosen people, those holy enough to be declared priests to serve before God.

God’s Anointing New Testament Era 1 Peter 2:5 you also like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. The awesome thing about this is that, unlike the sons of Aaron, we serve in a temple where the curtain has been removed  In Christ every believer is anointed. No need for oil every week. Mark 15:37,38 37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. 8

God’s Anointing New Testament Era 2 Cor 21,22 21And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Seal shows ownership. 9

10 Unity The key emphasis of Psalm 133 is unity.  Lack of war  Co-existence  Relative peace  People coming together If all peoples of the world were to come together in unity to worship the One True God of the Bible and to believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior and come together as Christians, there would be a wonderful unity!
