When the Europeans left the people transitioned from export farming back to subsistence farming Not sufficient to maintain a national economy Human impact 1990 – 1.5 billion acres of forest million acres gone Oil tankers near the coast are polluting fish and water supply Land cannot support the population increase Carrying capacity- # of people an area of land can support

5 West Africa West Africa depends on natural resources for economic development Corruption challenges economic efficacy and leads to violent political conflicts Illegal extraction and sale of diamonds, gold, timber, etc.. Unlawful sale of weapons

6 West Africa Continued Environmental issues contribute to poor health and wellness Poor health care, Poor education, lack of sanitation services Lake chad shrinking Causing conflict Fishing very important in this region - $400 million/year Unsustainable fishing practices – overfishing

Poorest region in Africa Democratic republic of Congo is the poorest country Rival groups trying to control resources Government officials take bribes from businesses

This region is flourishing with forests, river, mountains, plains, and wildlife Ivory trade  by 1980 half of the elephant population was wiped out Placing elephants on the endangered species list Congo Basin– great for commercial farming Bananas, pineapples, cocoa, tea, coffee, and cotton Leads to deforestation  global warming, desertification, soil erosion

9 Southern Africa Most of the population are subsistence farmers  poor
Face similar problems like the rest of Africa Lack of clean water Soil erosion Poaching Most areas have no gas or electricity Need wood for fire  deforestation
