1 Physical Properties of Matter/States of Matter
What is matter? What is meant by the states of matter? Physical properties of Matter can be observed or measured without changing the matter’s identity. Anything that takes up space/volume and has mass. You are matter Matter can exist in ( on Earth) 3 distinct states. These states are solid, liquid, and gas. Temperature is what determines what state of matter any given element or compound is in.

3 Physical Properties of Matter(states of matter)

4 Energy either needs to be added or removed to change states

5 States of Matter What is a solid?
particles arranged such that their shape and volume are relatively stable. solid tend to be packed together much closer than the particles in a gas or liquid.

6 States of Matter What is a liquid?
The particles in a liquid are free to flow, so while a liquid has a definite volume, it does not have a definite shape. Liquids take the shape of their container. Examples: at room temperature: water, mercury, vegetable oil, ethanol.

7 States of Matter What is a gas?
A gas has neither a definite volume nor a definite shape. The atoms are spaced apart and moving very fast. Examples of gases are air, oxygen, and helium

8 States of Matter How does temperature determine state?
Draw both and label What is required to change state? The higher the temperature the faster the atoms move Energy is required.

9 Recap

10 Physical Properties of Matter
Density is a physical property that describes amount of matter in a given volume. What is density?

11 EUREKA DENSITY!

12 Properties of Matter What is boiling point?
Boiling point is the point where matter transforms from its liquid state to its gas state. All matter has specific boiling points. Water’s boiling point is 100c Iron’s boiling point is 2750c

13 Properties of Matter What is melting point?
Melting point is where matter transforms from a solid to a liquid. Water’s melting point is 0c Iron’s melting point is 1535c

14 Physical Properties of Matter
What is solubility? Solubility is a physical property that determines if a substance will either dissolve in a liquid or remain solid in a liquid. soluble: Will dissolve in a liquid. insoluble: Will not dissolve in a liquid.
