Isaiah 6:1-8

State the purpose of the discussion Identify yourself

Authoritarian God (32%) - the God who is angry and intervenes in human affairs. Distant God (25%) – the God who created the universe and let it go. Benevolent God (23%) – the God who forgives all. Critical God (16%) – the God who is judging the world but is not intervening.

Isaiah 6:1-8

God is Set Apart/ Consecrated/ Sanctified He is separated, He is other, He is beyond us God is Morally Pure There is no sin or evil within Him.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the L ORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

He recognizes his own sinfulness He responds in confession about his sinfulness He models for us a proper fear of the Lord

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the L ORD Almighty.”

Verse 8, “Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left.” Verse 11 “Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine” Verse 18 “Woe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit,” Verse 20 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil” Verse 21 “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes” Verse 22 “Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks”

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the L ORD Almighty.”

“I’ve said unclean things” vs. “I am a man of unclean lips.” “I’ve told a lie to God” vs. “I am a liar.” “I’ve lusted” vs. “adultery lurks in my heart” “I’ve stolen” vs. “I am a thief.” The holiness of God is beautiful when it’s properly understood because it penetrates the veils of our self-deceit and reminds us that apart from God we are nothing

Fear of the Lord IS NOT Being Afraid of God Fear of the Lord IS Having Reverence/Respect for God

God is Set Apart/ Consecrated/ Sanctified He is separated, He is other, He is beyond us God is Morally Pure There is no sin or evil within Him.

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
