3. The Course Selection Timeline
October 16-26: Counseling Presentations to 9th, 10th, 11th grade students about course selection process
October : High School Students input elective and core requests into student portal MYAP plan
October 30 - November 10: High School Teachers input Core Course Recommendations
December - February: Counselors meet with students individually to review course requests and plan for the future
Feb 21: Students are given a final printout of their requests
Feb 28: Last day for counselors to change requests
May 16: List of scheduled classes for available in IC for student and parent viewing
August 1: Schedules published to Student Portal

5. Elective reminders
All electives will have the same GPA weight.
Take electives that will help you best prepare for college and give you experience in a career field of interest.
Choose classes needed to meet college requirements at the schools on your list.
Meet strand requirements.
Strand 1 – Art, Music, World Language
Strand 2 – English, Math, Science, Social Studies
Strand 3 – Business, Family and Consumer Science, Industrial Technology, Peer Tutoring
Choose at least 5 elective classes

Students should take a rigorous academic program that is not limited to but should include:
2 - 4 of the same World Language
3 or 4 years of science
4 years of math

10. Advanced placement (AP)
Classes taught in high school that are college-level learning
Students who take an exam at the end of the course and score a 3 or more earn college credit at Illinois universities. Each university will assign credits in their own way. See College Board for more information
Being successful in AP classes demonstrates to colleges that a student is interested in being challenged and has the skills to be successful in college.
Interested students should talk their teacher in the department in which the course is offered.

11. AP Capstone About the Course
AP Capstone is a College Board program that equips students with the following skills, which are valued by colleges:
independent research
collaborative teamwork
communication skills
Offered to sophomore and junior students. AP Capstone replaces a student’s core English class and is an ideal option for students considering Honors or AP English courses.

12. Academic support period (ASP)
All freshmen and sophomores will be scheduled into an ASP
Sophomore can opt out of ASP – 3.0 GPA
Juniors and seniors can elect to take an ASP
ASP is a non-credit bearing class

13. Late arrival early release
Juniors must take at least 6 classes per semester. Juniors can elect to have one periods of late arrival or early release.
Cumulative unweighted GPA 2.5 and no failures previous semester
If you choose Late Arrival or Early Release you may not be in the building.

14. Work Program
One class period of Cooperative Work Program (CO-OP) = one credit per year
Must enroll in On the Job (OTJ) 9th period = one credit per year.
Must work a minimum of 15 hours
Transportation is responsibility of student.

15. Elgin community college accelerated college dual credit
Students attend classes on the ECC campus full time.
A full year commitment is required.
Students are required to have an unweighted 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Student will choose classes from the Associate in Science, Associate in Arts or Associate of Applied Science course selection forms. Course descriptions are available at ECC Course Catalog
The student must purchase their own textbooks but the tuition is paid by D300.
Transportation is responsibility of student.
The college you attend will determine whether they will accept these courses or not. See Transferology for more information.
**WARNING: Students and parents should be aware that they will be responsible for tuition costs if they drop, fail or are removed from ECC programs.

17. Physical education exemption
P.E. can be excused through a Physical Education Exemption
9th-12th grade receive an exemption from Marching Band
11th and 12th grade receive an exemption through ongoing participation in an interscholastic athletic program
If you drop marching band or do not make a sport’s team you will be required to make up that PE credit in night school.

18. NCAA Eligibility Center division I and II athletes
Make sure you are on course to meet core-course requirements.

19. Individual appointments
Each student will have an individual appointment with their counselor to discuss courses selected.
Please wait until your individual meeting to ask any scheduling questions that you may have.
