Explain how obesity may affect performance in physical activity and sport (6-7) Apply knowledge of how all three components of health and well-being can be affected negatively by obesity (8-9)

I want to see you structuring exam style answers, securing all marks on offer. I want to see and hear you analysing the effects of obesity linking to future health problems in the three areas of health.

5 What is Obesity?

6 What is Obesity? A term used to describe people with a large fat content – caused by an imbalance of calories consumed to energy expenditure. BMI of over 30 or 20 per cent or move above ideal weight for height BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) A measure of whether someone is obese or not. Less than 20 = Underweight 20 – 25 = Correct Weight 25-30 = Overweight More than 30 = Obese

7 Task In your groups of 4 discuss and create a spider diagram answering the following questions: How can obesity effect fitness? How can it affect ‘social health’? How can it affect ‘mental health’? How can it affect ‘physical health’?

8 Effects on Fitness Limiting stamina/cardiovascular endurance
Making it difficult to perform any activity for long period of time Limiting flexibility Making it difficult to use a full range of movement when attempting to perform skills Limiting agility Making it difficult to change direction quickly Limiting speed and power Making it hard to react quickly or produce force

9 Effects on Physical Health
Obesity contributes towards: The development of cancer Heart disease/ heat attacks Increase in blood pressure The development of diabetes It causes cholesterol levels to rise It can lead to injury

10 Effects on Mental Health
It can lead to depression It can cause a loss of confidence It can make the individual feel that they can not contribute to society (well-being)

11 Effects on Social Health
It can lead to an inability (not able to) socialise. It may make the individual feel unable to leave home It may make the individual conscious of how they look and therefore uncomfortable in social situations (well-being).
