Stress Links There is a well-accepted link between stress and illness. The problem is that few actually know exactly how to measure stress, determine its effects, and manage its impact. Stress increases aging, reduces vitality, and is at the root of chronic diseases.

Stress is Killing Me! Most people acknowledge that stress is a major aspect of their life. Yet, as a population we do less for stress than we should because it can be difficult to believe that stress can impact the body. Why? Because everyone has stress, but not everyone dies from it—the “it won’t happen to me” syndrome.

I’m Stressed – So What? Stress is responsible for over 80% of all doctor’s office visits. Stress effects can kill us. Stress is linked to virtually all known diseases including: heart disease, ulcers, hypertension, IBS, phobia-anxiety, endocrine dysfunction, lowered immune function and cancer.

Chronic diseases are caused not by infection, but are lifestyle related. These diseases can be traced directly or indirectly to stress.

Stress Research Hans Selye, M.D., pioneered stress studies in the 1940s and 1950s. Selye found that when living organisms are stressed they react reflexively and biochemically in a stereotyped way that causes most of the body changes we associate with looking sick and feeling sick— regardless of the precise cause.

Stress Illnesses Caused by the breakdown of mind and body systems worn down by living with stress. Stress does not cause the illness but its effects lead to lowered vitality. Loss of vitality limits an organism’s ability to adapt to the environment.

Living With Stress Living with any kind of stress diminishes well being and saps the energy from both the psyche and the body. Covering up the early symptoms creates greater impact on the vitality of the future function of the regulatory systems of the body.

Official Stress Ills Appear only after the stress process has damaged some important function of mind or body seriously enough to interfere with a vital function. Once the damage is done the stress ill can be diagnosed -- after years of loss in vitality which was not foreseen.

Treatment After diagnosis, the traditional treatment is directed at the particular body function that has become disordered, and not according to the stress that actually caused the function to become disabled. The medical cause is determined as ulcer, hypertension, colitis, depression, etc. and treated as such.
