- they were polytheists

4. 613 AD, Muhammad began preaching that there is only one god
At first, Muhammad’s ideas were not accepted
- eventually, all Arabs declared their faith as Islam

5. Religion: Islam = the act of submitting to the will of God (Allah)
Followers of Islam are called Muslims
Quran (Koran) = Holy book of Islam which Muslims believe to be the actual word of God.
- it tells Muslims how they should live their lives

6. The Five Pillars of Faith:
There is no God but Allah.
Pray 5 times a day facing Mecca, the holy city.
Perform acts of charity.
Fast during the daylight hours during the month of Ramadan.
Make a pilgrimage or holy journey to Mecca.

7. Thousands of Muslims make a hajj or holy journey to Mecca each year.

8. Arab Contributions:
The Arab people have made many contributions to the world in the areas of science, math, medicine, geography, and literature.

9. SCIENCE:
Chemistry: experimenting and record keeping. Arabs are the founders of modern chemistry.

10. Astronomy: described solar eclipses and proved the moon effects tides
- astrolabe = an instrument used to figure the position of the stars

11. GEOGRAPHY: Made the first accurate map of the world.
Came up with the idea that the earth might be round.

12. MATH: Arabic numerals (0,1,2, …9,) were passed on to Europeans.
Invented Algebra.

13. MEDICINE: Started testing doctors
1st school of pharmacy & the 1st drugstores
Organized traveling clinics to give care to the sick
Discovered that blood circulates to and from the heart
Made important discoveries concerning several diseases and published these in an encyclopedia of medicine, used by European medical schools for 500 years

14. LITERATURE:
The Arabic people contributed a collection of tales called The Arabian Nights which tell what Islamic life was like.
