Date: 11/13/17 Unit: Chemistry                    Learning Goal:Predict properties of elements and                 compounds using trends of the periodic table and know                 how energy can alter matter chemically or physically. Investigative Science 9 – Ms. Kohler What happens when atoms form bonds? Remember that unbonded elements have an equal number of positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons. This means they have no charge! When atoms gain electrons in a bond, they gain negative charges and therefore become negatively charged. When atoms lose electrons in a bond, they lose negative charge and therefore become positively charged. The Oxidation Number of an atom is the charge that atom has when it forms a bond and therefore becomes an ion.

Date: 11/13/17 Unit: Chemistry                    Learning Goal:Predict properties of elements and                 compounds using trends of the periodic table and know                 how energy can alter matter chemically or physically. Investigative Science 9 – Ms. Kohler Answer these questions based on the bonding video: An atom that gains one or more electrons will have a ____________________ charge. An atom that loses one or more electrons will have a ____________________ charge. An atom that gains or loses one or more electrons is called an ____________. A positive ion is called a ______________ and a negative ion is called an _______________.

Date: 11/13/17 Unit: Chemistry                    Learning Goal:Predict properties of elements and                 compounds using trends of the periodic table and know                 how energy can alter matter chemically or physically. Investigative Science 9 – Ms. Kohler Answer these questions based on the bonding video. What is an ionic bond? Atoms will transfer one or more ________________ to another to form the bond.   Each atom is left with a ________________ outer shell. An ionic bond forms between a ___________ ion with a positive charge and a ________________ ion with a negative charge.
