COLLATERAL OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS

MISE EN SCENE The first scene in the opening title sequence of collateral is in a very crowded airport with the camera focused on one man in the crowd, This shows the audience that this character has importance. The second scene of the collateral opening title sequence is in a taxi rank workshop, this is used to show the normality of the characters in the scene by having them doing regular things like crosswords and watching TV. The lighting in the first scene is daylight, this tends to be used for creating a sense of safety. And in the second scene the lighting is dimmer and filtered so that it seems like a more captive environment as a contrast to the first scene that was bright and had more vibrant colours.

The costumes used by the characters in focus in the first scene are both suits, which would be used to show that these characters are important. One of the characters wears blacked out sunglasses give the sense of mystery as to who the character is, overall the characters have a smart appearance. In the second scene all of the characters have a more casual appearance as they are ordinary people, often used as the protagonist in thrillers, and so they are all wearing T- shirts, jackets and jeans. This gives these characters an ordinary appearance. The props used in the first scene consist of some luggage trollies that are used to add to the background, a news paper that the second character is carrying, a leaflet that the first character puts into his suit pocket and 2 briefcases the both characters are carrying and the swap the briefcases when they bump into each other showing importance to the cases, this typical of a thriller as it gives suspense as the audience don’t know what is in them.

The props used in the second scene of the collateral opening title sequence have a lot more variation as the scene is showing the normal items that people use for example; there are newspapers scattered across a table with people doing crosswords and reading the paper, other props used are mobile phones, coffee and car keys these props reinforce the idea of the characters being ordinary people. The performance of the first character in scene 1 makes the character seem like they have a high social status as they walk with good posture like they’re walking with purpose. The expression of the character would suggest that they are a serious, “to the point” kind of person as they have a straight face that looks like a serious stare. The second character in tis scene has a British accent and is looking around like he is being very cautious and so is very weary. The character in focus in the second scene of collaterals opening title sequence is shown to have a lower social status then the other characters as he is working as a taxi driver and he is portrayed to be intelligent as he is doing a crossword in the news paper, later in the scene the character puts a picture in the car with him suggesting that he is longing for a better life then he currently has.

CINEMATOGRAPHY The cinematography in the opening title sequence, the first scene mostly uses mid- shots and close-ups as the scene starts by tracking the first character and the cuts to the second then to show a mid-shot of the bumping into each other, there is also a close-up on the briefcases that the characters are carrying, which show importance, after this the is another mid-shot of the first character beginning to walk away; this then cuts to an over the shoulder associated point of view shot as the first character walks away. 6 The second scene at the start uses close-up shots on a variety of things to show the scene is in a taxi rank and to show the people in it are ordinary. The next shot used is a close-up on the third character doing a crossword and the camera then tilts up to see the characters face. There is then another cut and a low mid angle shot from the passenger seat of a taxi shows the character doing his daily routine and then there are more close up shots on the props that the character is using and then there is a shot of the taxi backing up and leaving the taxi rank. 7 SOUND The sound used in the background of the first scene is the muffled chatter of people, the sound of lanes landing and taking off and there is an amplified sound of footsteps when the characters are walking. The sound of the two characters bumping into one and other is amplified and so is the sound of the briefcases falling and hitting the ground. After the two characters stop speaking with each other there is music that is fast paced to follow the character’s walking movement with a fast drum beat and guitar.
