1 How would you make your own website?
Search and deductive reasoning

2 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide. They not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. 3 About this Lesson This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading—Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.9 Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names.

Students should think about websites they enjoy and what they like about them. They should then begin to brainstorm what they’d like to create a website about. Maybe it would be a fan page for a novel or movie they love, or maybe it would be a website for their classroom. They should take these ideas a step further to think about how the purpose of the website (whether it is to give detailed information, or give visitors a chance to form an online community and interact with others) will affect the design of a website. For example, a website like Wikipedia that’s designed to give people information (primarily by text) looks very different from a website that’s a photography blog. It may be helpful for students to search for their own favorite websites in order to get ideas. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. This question serves as an opportunity for students to think about how a website is really a series of separate pages that are designed individually. It may be helpful for them to visit a website in order to think about what information is on the home page and what information is available in other places. A student designing a website for their classroom might want to think about what other pages the home page could link to. For example, maybe the home page could link to a classroom calendar, a page that shows student artwork, and another page that shows a list of students’ favorite books. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. (Possible queries “what does it mean to create a website from scratch?”, “how is a website created?”.) From If you decide to build your website from scratch, you'll need to start using HTML and CSS. There are ways to extend your HTML skills and add more features and more depth to your website. If you are developing a professional website, these tools will help you get that edge that is needed in any business venture. Students can read further to understand that building a website from scratch means using code, like HTML, before seeing what the website will look like in a browser. People can also explore other options which offer support to build websites, rather than building from scratch. For example: WordPress is an example of a great option for building websites. It helps you create web pages and blog posts quickly and easily, set up the menus, allow and manage user comments, and has thousands of themes and plugins that you can choose from and use for free. Drupal and Joomla are other great CMS options. Once the CMS is hosted, you can manage your site from anywhere (in the world) that has an Internet connection. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. (Possible queries: “what is a domain name?”, “how is a website created?”). From This is the name you want to give to your website. For example, the domain name of the website you're reading is "thesitewizard.com". To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. Getting a name does not get you a website or anything like that. It's just a name. It's sort of like registering a business name in the brick-and-mortar world; having that business name does not mean that you also have the shop premises to go with it. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation.
