1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at BingInTheClassroom@Microsoft.com. You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on the Microsoft Educator Network. Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location, take a Skype lesson on today’s topic, or invite a guest speaker to expand on today’s subject. And if you are using Windows 8, the panoramas in the MSN Travel App are great teaching tools. We have thousands of other education apps available on Windows here. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Measurement & Data CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.1CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),... CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.2CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

3 On the north-central coast of Vietnam, in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, a place full of incredible sights, lies Sơn Đoòng Cave, the world’s largest known cave. How large? Its biggest chamber alone is over 3 miles long, 660 feet high, and nearly 500 feet wide. Its stalagmites tower up to 230 feet above the cave’s floor. You’d think a cave this big would be difficult to miss, but the entrance of Sơn Đoòng wasn’t found until 1991, and then the cave itself wasn’t surveyed until 2009 and 2010. Among Sơn Đoòng’s many surprises is that rainforest you see here – it isn’t outside the cave, it’s within. A sinkhole up on the surface allows sunlight into a portion of Sơn Đoòng, and seeds and spores that have drifted in over the years took root in the cave’s damp soil. So a spelunking venture here will reveal a magical underground environment on a scale you’ll find nowhere else, plus a bonus visit into a hidden jungle. How many feet would it take to equal one mile? 3 Web Search/Thi nking How many miles would it take to equal one foot? 4 Web Search/Thi nking Since we know the length of the cave in miles, how could we create an equation to convert this measurement to feet? 5 Web Search/Thi nking What is the difference between one foot and one mile?
