OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT IS IMPORTANT
CROSS HILL ACADEMY CLASS 7-5 Introduction by Shannon Moore

HUMANS NEED RESOURCES TO SURVIVE AND WE CALL THESE RESOURCES “the L. A
HUMANS NEED RESOURCES TO SURVIVE AND WE CALL THESE RESOURCES “the L.A.W.S OF NATURE :”LIGHT (ENERGY,REALLY) AIR, WATER AND SOIL. WE ALSO TEND TO USE MORE THAN THE BASIC ESSENTIALS . EVERYTHING WE USE FROM TOOTHPASTE TO TELEVISIONS CAME FROM THE EARTH IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER . THIS ISN’T A BAD THING AS LONG AS WE DON’T TAKE MORE THAN THE EARTH CAN PROVIDE.
3
YOUR ECOLOGICAL FOOT PRINT ISN’T THE SAME AS THE ONE YOU MAKE WITH YOUR FOOT, IT IS MUCH BIGGER! AN ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IS HOW MUCH SPACE OR LAND YOU NEED TO SURVIVE. THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IS THE AREA NEEDED FOR ALL THE PRODUCERS (AND CONSUMERS ) THAT YOU CONSUME, AS WELL AS THE DECOMPOSERS NEEDED TO REPROCESS ALL YOUR WASTE !
4
THIS INCLUDES: Where all your food and water come from
Plants needed to convert your CO2 back into O2 Cleaning your sewage back into fresh water And even where your garbage goes !
5
It also includes some of your cultural needs such as where you live, play and go to school .
6
Everyone has some kind of footprint on earth
Everyone has some kind of footprint on earth. Some footprints are bigger than others. It is not a bad thing because we all use things to meet our needs.
7
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT ? IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE OF HOW YOU ARE IMPACTING THE WORLD AROUND YOU. IF WE ARE TO CONTINUE TO HAVE GOOD LIVING CONDITIONS, WE MUST MAKE SURE THAT WE’RE NOT USING UP ALL OF WHAT NATURE HAS TO OFFER, QUICKER THAN IT IS BEING PRODUCED, AND WE AREN’T PRODUCING WASTE QUICKER THAN NATURE CAN ABSORB IT.

Transportation By Natalie Severino, Justin Rosario & Christopher Ofori Cross Hill Academy Class 7-5
9
What is Transportation?
Most of us drive cars, ride in buses and fly to places to get around. These forms of transportation run on fossil fuels, which are a non-renewable resource. This means that there is a set amount that exists on Earth, and when that runs out, we can’t make anymore. The more you drive in individual cars, the bigger your footprint is because you are using more fossil fuels and causing more pollution. Taking the bus or carpooling uses less fuel because lots of people are using the same vehicle rather than everybody having their own, so the footprint is much smaller. Riding your bike or walking has an even smaller footprint because no fossil fuels are used at all!
10
Biking Biking your way to places is the way to go!
It reduces your transportation footprint, gets you to your desired destination fast, and is a great workout! So you'll stay in shape, and help the planet!
11
Walking People can walk, from place to place instead of going in
vehicles to get to their destination. Walking reduces your transportation footprint, and it’s also good for you!
12
Longboarding People can longboard to the destination they are trying to reach instead of using vehicles. A longboard reduces your transportation carbon footprint and is powered by your body, which counts as exercise.
13
Scooters Scooters are fun for the young, and get you anywhere you want! It may take some time, but you'll surely be decreasing your transportation footprint!
14
RipSticks A Rip stick is good because it doesn’t pollute the air. It is also good because it is exercise while you are moving your hips and a good way of transportation.
15
Buses Buses are good because instead of five or 10 people meeting using cars, everyone can fit in just one public bus.
16
Trains Trains are very efficient because they can have as many as 14 cars. Each car can seat about 50 people. It’s not polluting the air like if there were 500 (or more) cars on the road.
17
Skateboards Skateboards are green because when you ride them you don’t pollute the air. You don’t have to plug it, charge it or use electricity.
18
Electric BMW These cars are also good because they don’t run on gas to pollute the air. You don’t have to spend lots of money on gas either
19
Hybrid Cars Instead of using gas and polluting the air these cars run with combination gas and electricity motors.

Water By Blerta Demaj, Kala Hayes & Jonathan Perez Cross Hill Academy Class 7-5
21
Introduction Water is a precious resource
Remember: the more water we can conserve, the smaller our footprint will be 75% of Earth is water, so don’t use so much of it!
22
All living things need water in order to survive, but only 2% of all of the water on Earth is fresh, drinkable water Remember: it is important that we use as little as possible because nobody wants to drink dirty water
23
Reducing Your Water Footprint
One Way To Reduce Your Water Footprint is when you’re brushing your teeth, stop the water from running. It wastes water and is unnecessary. Also, you should fill a cup with just enough water that you know you won’t have more left. Then turn off the water and when you rinse, use the water in the cup! Not wasting water there, are ya’?
24
NO Dripping Sinks Allowed!
When you are washing your dishes or hands, you usually just throw your hand on the knob and shut it off. But is it really completely off? The water you use can lead to a dripping faucet. So, make sure your faucet is completely off because every drop that drips counts.
25
Washing your clothes When you are washing your clothes, you shouldn’t wash them everyday. When you have a bunch of clothes (About a washer full), then you wash them. your half- full washer load will be wasting water! Ask yourself this, do you need to wash your clothes EVERYDAY?
26
Wipes And Hand Sanitizers
Instead of washing your hands, you can use wipes. After you eat, you can use hand sanitizer. It still cleans your hands and you’re not using so much water. Wipes and hand sanitizers are just like washing, so you don’t need to worry about dirty hands!
27
Showers! When you are planning to take a long shower or even a bath, remind yourself of how much water you are wasting. When you’re taking a bath, you’re sitting in your own filth.
28
Also, when you’re washing your hair or anything like that, you should turn off the water. Or, use that water by doing something else like washing your body or something! A short shower can help out because you don’t need to spend one hour in a tub.
29
Juicers When you are thirsty and you have a bunch of fruits around, you’ll get hydrated and it’s good for you. Juice is a great thing to drink on a hot day. You should still drink water, just not so much.
30
A Pitcher Of Water When you want a drink of cold water, don’t leave your faucet running just add some ice. You can reuse plastic containers like juice and water bottles to satisfy your needs of that refreshing cold water. You should keep a pitcher of water in your fridge for drinking. It’s cold and ready immediately.
31
Foam Soap If you want to wash your hands, you should use foam soap.
It reduces the time to wash your hands by just using some and rinse. It’s better than bar soap and liquid soap because you don’t have to wet your hands first to get a good lather. And it’s fun to use and still cleans your hands !
32
Tap Water Tap water isn't as bad as people say it is
Tap water is less expensive than bottled water and doesn't pollute the earth Tap water isn't dangerous When you are done drinking from a bottle of water people throw it away and it piles up, creating piles of water bottles that are polluting earth If you use left over water bottles and fill them with tap water you can save money and the earth
33
Save extra water to use later
One way to save and reuse water is when you are done cleaning your fish tank you can reuse the water to water your plants You can install rain gutters around the roof of your house and drain the water into a container and use it to water plants or clean your outside furniture

35
CLOTHING The clothes we wear have a footprint since it takes resources to make them. Brand new clothes have a bigger footprint than hand-me-downs. Wearing second-hand clothing and giving your old clothing away is an example of the 3 R’s conversation. The 3 R’s are Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
36
SAVE CLOTHING!!! The average New Yorker tosses 46 pounds of clothing and textiles in the trash each year, totaling 6% of our entire residential waste stream. More than 80,000 New Yorkers have helped NYC lose 1.4 million pounds by recycling unwanted clothing, linens, paired shoes, etc.
37
HAND-ME-DOWNS Hand-me-downs are clothing passed down by older siblings or cousins. They reduce clothing’s carbon footprint They can be clothing that doesn’t fit you or that you don’t like. You save money and time
38
REDUCING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
When you are getting hand-me-downs or getting second hand clothing, you are reducing your carbon footprint When you reduce carbon footprints, you are actually saving money and time You may be saving people by donating the clothing to those who need it
39
SECOND HAND CLOTHING Second hand clothes are clothes that have been worn by a previous owner but are still in good condition to wear and use Second hand clothes are not sold in the same stores as new clothing; they are sold at thrift shops that sell them at a greatly reduced price, even if they’ve only been worn once! Taking your clothes to a thrift shop is an alternative way of getting rid of clothes that don’t fit you or you don’t like
40
What to do with old clothing
You can drop your clothing into donation bins You can use them as rags to clean your house, your car or even your kicks Make a hacky sack out of a sock You can restyle old clothing by adding patches or ripping them You can swap them with friends and other people
41
MAKE YOUR OWN CLOTHING Making your own clothes
is a great way to reduce your clothing carbon footprint and it saves money You can go online and learn how to make your own clothing You can get fabric that you like You design your clothes the way you like and you’ll love what you’re wearing because you made it
42
Donate your old clothing
Eventually you are going to wind up not fitting into some of your clothing. Instead of throwing away the clothes that do not fit, give them away to charity. You don’t have to leave the country or state you are living in, go to a donation bin in your neighborhood. Just drop the clothes off, then a truck will come along and pick it up. People all around the world will end up getting your clothes.
43
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why a textile program? 5.7% of NYC’s residential waste stream consists of textiles like clothing and towels. New Yorkers discard 193,000 tons of textiles every year in NYC alone. What happens to materials donated? Materials that are donated are sorted into different grades including usable/non- usable cotton scrap, cotton blend scrap and synthetics. These materials are then sold for reuse or recycling.
44
Ashley’s Example I have a sister who is older than
me and another sister who is younger. My older sister has many beautiful clothes. They usually don’t fit her after winter or fall. So my big sister gives them to me which is an example of hand-me-downs. My younger sister does not usually get clothes from me because she is only 6 years old. Instead we donate the clothing so someone else gets it and this is an example of second hand clothes.

46
Play Playing and moving around is very important for humans. Some games and sports use less stuff and less space than others. A game of chess uses less space and equipment than football does so chess’ footprint is smaller. The more stuff you have and the more space you use to play sports and games, the bigger your footprint.
47
For a football field This picture shows tree stumps every where; just for a football field. Without trees we lose oxygen and have more carbon dioxide. Trees produce oxygen and take in carbon dioxide.
48
Save up space Instead of taking up space outside, play a virtual game like the Wii. Take a friend and play inside, it takes up less space and you still have fun.
49
Play together Don’t use an entire basketball court to play one-on-one. It takes up a lot of space for just two kids. When you play together, more people can play in the same place.
50
Let’s Play Together You can play in one house instead of playing in individual houses. You have another way to play with your friends without going online which is called split screen.
51
Using Less Electricity
There are many ways for you to reduce the electricity use when you are playing your video games. You can play for one hour, wait an hour, and then go back to playing for another hour instead of playing for three straight hours.
52
Turn Off The Console! Whenever you go out or go to eat some where always turn off your console and controller too. You can reduce your carbon footprint a lot by doing this simple little thing.
53
Recycle The Plastic Box From Video game
You can put all of your discs in a case and recycle the plastic box from the video game. Or, you can sell these plastic boxes to GameStop because they use them for the games that don’t have cases.
54
Don’t Play As Much Online
If you don’t play as much online you can reduce the energy used to power the router that you are using. You can also reduce the electricity that companies are using to give you online service.
55
Plant a tree Go outside and plant as many trees as possible. If you don’t know how to, ask a grownup to help you.
56
Save the world Save the world; without the world none of us would be here at this very moment. Pollution is bad for world and us. The Ozone layer is getting weaker every time we pollute.

How to Reduce your food Carbon Foot Print
By Cheyenne Collazo, Andrew Rodriguez, Fabian Tovar Cross Hill Academy Class 7/5
58
Food The food we eat has a bigger footprint than just the land where it was grown. Water, fertilizer and pesticides are used to grow it, packaging is used to keep it fresh and ship it, and fuel is used to transport it. Most of the food in the grocery store has traveled over 1000 miles to get here. Meat has a large footprint because all of the food that the animal ate when it was alive is calculated into the equation. North Americans waste enough food each day to feed thousands of people for a year! To reduce your foot print, you can be aware of how much food you are wasting, buy food that was locally grown, with the least amount of packaging.
59
Plastic, less plastic, or no plastic
When you go grocery shopping you can use plastic bags not paper because you can reuse plastic for trash, etc You can use less plastic when you go grocery shopping for fruits and vegetables, too. When you only buy a little, don’t use any bag. You can use no plastic …… Instead of constantly buying plastic water bottles you can reuse them or you can buy reusable ones
60
Eat Only Organic Foods, not Junk
When you only eat foods that are organic and not processed you can compost the peels, skins, seeds, core, etc. When processed foods are made it’s usually in a factory and a factory’s smoke harms the environment.
61
GROW YOUR OWN FOODS You could grow fruit and vegetables in your garden
It will help the environment because you may use less bags when you shop It could also help the environment because you waste you won’t be polluting the air using your car to go grocery shopping
62
Go to the farmers’ market
you could buy organic foods It helps the environment because they use less plastic and packaging It also helps the environment because they don’t use a lot of air polluting transportation to get their goods to the market.
63
Eat smaller portions Put smaller portions on your plate. If you take a lot of food and don’t finish, you end up throwing the rest out. You can always have “seconds” if you’re still hungry. you save money, food and trash bags.
64
Save leftovers When you save your leftovers you don’t have to waste more money to buy more food. You can also enjoy the meal even more because some foods just taste better the second time! You can combine your leftovers with something else to make a new meal
65
Give Leftovers To Your Dog
When you give the food to your dog you can save a lot of money on dog food Also you save trash bags and the transportation needed to go and buy more dog food.
66
Give extras to shelters or people in need
When you give your extras or leftovers to people in need you save them the struggle of trying to find it or scavenge for it. Also, when you give your leftovers to the needy you could be saving a life
67
Small ways you can reduce your carbon footprint
Drink all of the milk in the bowl when you eat cereal Only serve yourself a little bit and if you want more then help yourself When you’re at the grocery store buy only what you need for the week There are many other ways to reduce your carbon footprint. But even if you only do one of these things listed, one time, it will help the environment
68
Compost food in your backyard
When you compost your food in your backyard you create fresh un-used soil When you have a compost it saves trash bags and money For example: you go through a lot of trash and you use a lot of trash bags, when composting your organic food you save money!

70
Do you recycle at school? Do you always turn off the lights?
Think about how much energy would be saved at your school if everyone turned off the lights when they left the room. Think about how much would get recycled if everyone recycled everything they possibly could!
71
Paper Paper is made from plant fibers called cellulose,
which are found in wood.
72
Paper Paper is used for many things at school such as napkins, tissues, loose-leaf, cardboard, and paper towels.
73
Reduce paper use Work can still get done with less paper being used in school: Use the smart board with one copy of the work to teach a class, instead of giving out a printed copy or the work to every student. Have two students share a sheet of paper to Conserve the amount of paper used per class! Print only one class set of material and use with all classes
74
How to use less paper Instead of using paper towels, use hand dryers
In notebooks, use all the pages back and front and use all of the page When doing work sheets, print the pages back and front
75
How to use less water Put hand sanitizers in the bathrooms and classrooms limit time washing hands Turn off faucets completely during and after washing hands to prevent leaks and/or water waste
76
Ways to save water in school
Faucets should be turned off in bathrooms immediately after usage If more water fountains were placed around the school, students wouldn’t purchase water bottles that will probably end up thrown in the garbage, not recycled Install automatic shut-off faucets in the bathrooms
77
Reducing carbon footprints in the cafeteria
Students should not be forced to take food than they will not eat, or allowed to take more than they can reasonably eat. it is wasteful to throw out food that could have been given to another student Foam trays should be replaced with plastic trays that can be reused or cardboard trays that can be recycled into new plates, trays, napkins, or even newspapers
78
Use those blue bins! Cans and bottles are frequently thrown out instead of recycled. They should be put in recycling bins so they can be brought back for the 5¢ deposit. A lot of money is being lost!
79
How to save electricity in school
Be sure to turn of all electrical equipment in the classroom Have students or teachers check around the school to make sure energy isn’t being wasted in empty classrooms computers, monitors, heaters, and air conditioners should be switched off by the end of the day before school closes
80
More ways to save electricity
Open windows inside of the classrooms to cool the room instead of turning on an air conditioner or fan that will use lots of energy. Don’t forget to open the door for air flow. Natural light from outside can be used to light the classroom so the ceiling lights can be switched off.
81
Recycling programs Add more recycling bins, participate in recycling cans by placing them in the bins Students can brainstorm ways to recycle throughout the school Create a good recycling program to save electricity, paper, and use items less harmful to the environment
82
Recycling programs In our school there are thousands of recyclable items thrown out every month We use about a thousand sheets of paper a day; we can reduce that amount by putting good recycling programs in place!
