Your safety is our primary concern so before you start to do any car maintenance you should make sure that you and your car are as safe as possible by following the guidance below: Never carry out car maintenance on the hard shoulder of a motorway or at the side of a busy road. Park your car well away from traffic. Tell someone you are going to carry out some car maintenance so they can keep an eye out in case you get into any difficulty. Always park your car on a flat surface and make sure there is no loose or uneven ground. Make sure the handbrake is on. Put the car in first gear. If you are opening the bonnet, make sure the engine is cool before you do so. Wear gloves. If you are unsure about something, always check with a mechanic. 39 Start with jingle prototype SCRIPT Welcome to the Easy Car Maintenance, Basic Car Care Skills for everyone. This video will show you how to change a wheel. There are five steps in the process – Secure, Prepare, Act, Replace and End.  SCRIPT – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO - Introduction

40 Screen 8 - Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 1 Secure

41 Step 1 1.1 The first step is to make the scene Secure. Here are a few simple things that will ensure your safety. 1.2 Park your car on flat ground, put your hazard lights on, put your car into first gear and ensure the handbrake is on. Then put on your hi-vis vest, which you should have in your boot. 1.3 Next, take out the tools you need to change the wheel. You will need a jack, a spare tyre, and a wheel brace or spanner. 1.4 Its a good idea to have a reflective triangle in your boot. If you have one, place it 20m from the rear of your car so you are visible to other drivers. SCRIPT - Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 1 Secure

42 Screen 9 – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 2 Prepare

43 Step 2 2.1 The next step is Prepare. 2.2 While most cars have alloy wheels, if your car has hubcaps, the first thing you will need to do is to take the hubcap off the wheel. 2.3 Some cars also have a special security or anti-theft nut. If your car has this type of nut, you must remove this first. The key for this may be either in the car’s glove compartment or in the boot. If you can’t find it, check your vehicle manual. Once this is off, start to loosen the other wheel nuts using your wheelbrace or spanner. Don’t take them off completely just yet. Loosen the 1st wheel nut followed by the nut diagonally opposite and keep going until all of the nuts are loosened. If the nuts are tight, use your foot to push down the wheelbrace or spanner. SCRIPT – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 2 Prepare

44 Screen 10 Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 3 Act

45 SCRIPT Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 3 Act
3.1 The next step is to Act. This means elevating your car using the jack. 3.2 Every car has a jacking point which is reinforced. Check the diagram on top of your car’s jack or in your vehicle manual to help you to locate it. 3.3 Slide the jack into the correct position at the jacking point underneath the car. 3.4 Now, turn the handle of the jack to raise up your car. SCRIPT Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 3 Act

46 Screen 11 – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 4 Remove (i)

47 Step 4 4.1 Step 4 is to remove the punctured wheel and replace with the new one. 4.2 Remove the wheel nuts completely and put them somewhere safe so you don’t lose them. 4.3 Now, take off the wheel. 4.4 As an added safety measure, it is a good idea to put your punctured wheel flat on the ground and slide it underneath your car, just in case the car falls off the jack. 4.5 Roll your spare wheel until it’s in front of the exposed hub then gently lift it up and align the wheel holes to the hub. 4.6 You can then put the nuts back on one at a time, tightening with your wheelbrace or spanner. SCRIPT – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 4 Remove (i)

48 Screen 12 – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 4 Replace (ii)

4.8 Next, wind down the handle of the jack nice and slowly until the car is on the ground. 4.9 Slide the jack out from under your car. 4.10 Finish tightening up the wheel nuts by turning them clockwise. Use a little bit of force to get them as tight as you can. SCRIPT – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 4 Replace (ii)

50 Screen 13 – Tutorials - Tyre Safety - Changing a Wheel – VIDEO – Step 5 End

51 Step 5 5.1 End with a safety check. 5.2 Put all of the equipment - that is, the tools, the triangle, your hi-vis vest and the damaged wheel - back into the boot. 5.3 Job done. You are good to go.
